If I Only Had a Chine

If We All Only Had a Chine
*
*

I would watch their bikinis,
conferrin' with wahines
Waitin' for a sign.
*

And my head I'd be scratchin' while
my thoughts were busy hatchin'
How to buy a boat with chine.
*

I'd could surf every wave,
And the gals they would rave,
and life would be so benign.
*

See, on the waves we'd be smokin'
as we skimmed by Hoboken
If we all had a chine.
*

Oh, I could tell you why
The ocean's near the shore.
You could think of things you never thunk before.
And then you'd paddle, and paddle some more.
*

You would not be just a nothin'
your head all full of stuffin'
If your boat had a chine.
*

You would no more be a-pearlin',
A huli-in' and a-whirlin'
If you only had a chine.

With apologies to anyone from Oz.

That's really pretty.
I can just imagine your soaring poetry once you've tried a Pueo. :-)
Happy New Year Yank.

Just how good is that Pueo anyways?

#2 Wed, 12/31/2008 - 5:02pm

That Pueo is pure Poetry in motion mate.

If you try it... you will differently blow the fuze.. and be known as "Proud Pueorider"

You will no longer harp on about craft semantics, your energy will be spent on the water, and you will have a true sense of belonging...and peacefulness...wonderment...even spiritual enlightenment.
hehe
On that note, I am off on my holidays:-)
Get your reply in 3 weeks...
Oh and happy New Year fuzzie

How do you paddle the Zephyr 'like Jr.' ?

So far it has been a a littlebit of a love/hate relation ship for me. The boat can be screaming fast and extremely good for me - then, the next moment, I find myself struggeling - too bad that I cannot read the ocean better.

It is a really nice boat, very well made, beautiful in every detail. A very nice object to own, really.
Very good craftsmenship. I definitely like the way Karel builds boats. While repairing the boat I saw the materials used - very good.
The stringer could be glued down a little different because in case of an accident it will come lose; a more flexible glue, less brittle. might help.

It strings waves together very, very well, definitely better than the Fusion, or Hurricane for that matter. Feels real good in big condition. Upwind is also good.
Entirely comfortable.

The ama causes me some problems, it 'controls the boat' a little too much - that may be something to get used to: It can give you a sudden bump from the back left, even when you see the wave coming.

There is enough wave action where I don't get the boat going though. It is rather puzzling and frustrating: I see the wave, know what I want to do right in front of me - and don't get on it.

This boat might be truly 'perfect' if it would take off in the wave from a lower hull speed a little easier. The boat seems to sit back at that moment. It is close.
The main reason for frustration is that it runs so well in other moments.

I added here to this thread in the hope that someone could add his or her experience.

Some say that the ama rigging has to be figured out individually.

My guess is that Junior knows the boat so well that he is able to keep it at speed most of the time so that it never gets into that position.

Little add on: we went out yesterday - my first downwind run on my own ' low volume' boat ( ' what is that ? Is that an old Twogood ? ... )- the maiden voyage if you will - against 2 Zephyrs - it did very well with some very pleasant characteristics in medium waves. Good reason to finish the boat.

My experience with it: it turned out to be quite a bit of extra work, most of it because everything is made from scratch, not always the best tools available, redoing things etc.
Is it worth it ? Yes, but I'd say you need to build three boats to get it right, the first two are for practice.

I`m a little weirded out by this news. Especially to be first hearing about an OC new boat on OCP .

Just goes to show you OCP delivers.....

Fuze, just rumors and possibly a private project.

Well , one thing is for sure , Karel is and has always pushed the design envelope for ocean canoes.

Hows ` about a new years toast to Outrigger Connection for all the years of design and refinement of outrigger canoes?

In regards to the Zephyr, yes it takes time to figure out the rigging as one way doesn't completely workout for every condition. Rig too light in windy/choppy conditions and you end up huli'ing if you aren't ready for it lifting fast. Rig heavy in flatter water and it seems to go slow.

From reading here and seeing the pictures of Karel Jr.'s Zephyr, he used a Mantra ama for the Solo and Relay. So the ama and setup does play a difference to the conditions for him since he used that setup instead of the normal ama.

I've swapped my Zephyr ama out and used my Fusion ama a couple of times and it does feel different. Still takes more time on the water in different conditions though to figure out what combination to use.

No matter though as sometimes the conditions lets me get on and stay on the bumps easy, while sometimes it feels like the boat is getting sucked back even when trying to get the hull speed up. I think it may need just a little bit more volume behind the cockpit, but not as much as what the Fusion has. I know that is one of the main differences they changed when they designed the Zephyr to reduce the profile for sidewinds.

Maybe a new Zephyr ama could be designed that will make it adapt better or easier (for some of us). Some say the new ama for the Pueo made it faster and better than the first ama they used on it. The Bixler ama made the Polaris/Pegasus feel different as well from when used with the original ama.
