It's fairly simple, but you'll have to ask someone for specifics. Pat Erwin won the 1st one (maybe two). Mark Rigg then won several (4-5?). Then Jr. won them all since 97, except for the two Kai won. So something like this.
Pat Erwin 92?
Mark Rigg 93-96
Jr. 97-08, except for Kai 2000? and the longer one two or three yrs. ago.

Top three finishers from 1999 to 2008, except for 2004.

Hope to find top three results for the first years, too.

Will do State Championship Hawaii later.

Jim, please see the second link in the first post for what is there so far.

Who were the top three finishers in the 2004 Kaiwi Channel Solo OC 1 ?

#3 Sat, 01/03/2009 - 7:17pm

Check out the old molo solo site if its still up. It has archives of ppl crossing before it was even a race like Kevin Olds and a few other guys I think.

The info might be on the new site that epic runs but before the race got split between canoe and ski there was a site that had all that stuff on it.

Eckhart, in the races won by Rigg, I think John came in 2nd in all of them. I don't think he likes recalling that, though, so confirm w/ someone else!

thank you google

#10 Sun, 01/04/2009 - 10:38am

Surface conditions? I think one of his fastest time before this year was in the chineless Viper.

#11 Sun, 01/04/2009 - 10:40am

Not likely the conditions; all other times are pretty stable before and after.
30 min is a lot.

No clue if the Mantra had chines btw

thanks for the link.

Foti brother's website lists their achievements in paddling.

Relay data are more difficult to come by.

No forget the wahine paddlers: Sonia Lambert and Loretta Toth, who were the the trailblazers for ironmaning solo the Channel in '96 Kanaka Ikaika race.

I don't recall any one-man's in the '89 race, but I've been told that Old's did it in a conventional 3-man in the very early 80's along with Tresnak, Sr., who raced in a mono hull kneeling down all the way. Both paddled solo their own canoes the hard way without rudder.

No clue if the Mantra had chines btw

The Mantra which was before the Stingray was chineless. The first chines on Karel's boats was on the Stingray and it had 3 of them. The Fusion built after the Stingray, only has 2 chines.

Interesting Star Bulletin article from 2000 about the equipment about to be used in that years Molokai Channel Crossing. Mentions the Mantra and several other OC-1's of that time.

Here's another good article about the OC-1 booming business from 2002.

Kala Mai....Rambo...I stand corrected, Cole did win a solo. My bad. Cole is a cool, funny guy. It wasn't a knock against him.
