Such an "underground" operation! I bought mine on-the-spot-at-the-beach from a steersman who needed the cash - and another friend of mine made an "official order" through a canoe club contact and waited over 6 months after my purchase. This adds to the mystique, I LOVE my steering blade. Les can only do so much, people!

Black Bart paddles are also pretty awesome. I'm pretty sure Jr. used one in most, if not all of his solo victories.

Any other suggestions on how to place an order?

#15 Sun, 04/10/2011 - 8:52am

call Island Paddler and place an order. Or buy plenty raffle tickets from Healani cause last year a makana alii paddle was one of the prize's. of course a scorpious xm is not a bad consolation if you don't win a makana alii!

If I could make a suggestion, here on Maui we have a builder named Mike Owens of Owens Ocean Sports. The guy hand crafts amazing paddles. He makes them to our specifics, and does them all by hand. They are on Makana Alii, in only they don't have the name yet. Mark my words, in two or three years people are going to be lining up for an Owens paddle. Look for his name this year in the one man, he has been crushing it and practicing with the best.

Try "Oni Paddles" - Custom made by Keoni Kino

Makana Denton on Oahu makes some of the best paddle I have ever tried. You can probably reach him through Kamanu Composites. Also, by comparison, I own several Broad Reach and Makana Ali'i, therefore, Mr. Denton has a good thing going.

Gauchopaddler, are you sure that it's Makana Denton from Kamanu and not Denton Miyamura? I've asked around and everyone was surprise that Makana Denton was making paddles. I did see the other day a blade that was made by Denton Miyamura. It looked pretty nice and looks similar to a Makana Ali'i. I'm planning to test one out to see how it performs.

Oneman, you are correct, I do not make paddles. Gaucho was just blabbing nonsense about one experimental blade I made for fun. Sorry for the confusion, and good luck with your paddle search.

The paddles made by Kai Ko'o Paddles in San Diego are spectacular, and equally as good as a Makana Ali'i.
Check out their stuff on FB... http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kai-Koo-Paddles/340054612752137

Ordered a Broadreach double bend. Just as good, clean catch and you can actually get it. I'm just saying.
