Return to the Pier 09 (definitely not the "Doctor")

Last Saturday we had the first race of 2009 in the Southern California OC-1 Winter Racing Series.
Beautiful day, but sucky flat conditions.

Nice one Painteur, that's the rear angle i wanted on Karel but needed to keep the cams low profile.

Did you you do the "grenade pin" thingy?

Not yet Rambo. It's coming. I was amazed at what happens behind you. Something you never see. Water was it's usual 56 F and hardly a factor with the lake conditions.
If anyone from this race has picked up an aluminum Pueo iako let me know please. Just tried to go for a paddle and yep lost it after the race.
Mahalo.

Great video. Great boat. Great music. Haven't heard Talking Heads in a long time. It's really cool to see other boats in the scene. I'd love to see the rear view in the bumps... Cool perspective.
Aloha,
Eric

Did you end up catching that guy in the end?

#7 Tue, 01/20/2009 - 2:37pm

Sure did Jim, he's a friend and paddling buddy. That's what I like about racing. Even though we are not in the same age group the battle is fought hard against anyone in the field.

Nice video, Painteur, but I was fascinated by your video "Outrigger Pump 101" which was in the sidebar.

Is the pump for training only or do you use it in races? How long does the battery last (how much water will it pump before dead)?

I've got a similar setup in my dinghy to stop it swamping overnight during the wet season (but I use an 80 amp-hour deep cycle battery).

Can you post another video with the pump fixed in a canoe being paddled so we can see how it sits, pls?

Capnron I made this video for our club members and that is actually one of our older setups. Here in California it's legal but not mandatory to use a "mechanical bailer". It slid on a small rail under #4 seat.
Our current McGyver has simplified the setup and added bigger pumps (800gallons per hour). It's powered by a sealed motor cycle battery zip-lock-bagged and rubber-banded under the seat. They have done Newport to Catalina to Newport 5+5 hours on one charge. Obviously on a swampy day that may be less. It is so cool when you see the water pushing out the hose as soon as it's 2-3 inches in the boat.
I'll definitely get some documentation together soon.

Cool!

Has anyone huli'd with the setup? Any problems with the battery?

I think AOCRA and race organisers here would have a fit if someone showed up for a race with this setup. Whadda ya reckon, Rambo?

Well it's definitely against the rules. It could be argued that it is a safety device, there's that much crap they want us to carry now what's one more thing. Sticking to Hawaiian ideals went out the window in OZ years ago unfortunately.
