If Only BJ Penn Was a Paddler...

...He wouldn't have quit in the 4th round.

No chance that guy. Not one lick in. GSP saw bladed right though him last night.

That's a pretty crazy thing to say for someone who lives in Hilo!

Such a sweet match up last night in the ring.
Our good ol' Canuk boy GSP surely dominated that match!
Must be all the winter training in cold, cold Montreal that makes him so tough!

This BJ Penn?http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Dec/11/br/br5236910784.html
Good for him. I'm glad he lost.

its not smart to talk smack about bj penn on a hawaiian paddling forum

Everyone here loves that guy and still do but he didnt do his training - period. Like Kai or Jr making their first race the Solo. A conscious decision.

BJ had a decent 1st round the way he was handling GSP's attempt to grapple him against the fence and he did get some good exchanges in initially, but the next 3 rounds were hard to watch from Hilo.
In the lead up to this fight, I thought it was interesting to here BJ talk about weight class and MMA. I agree with him that weight class should be a bit looser with MMA in the ring. What good is a martial art if you cannot demonstrate it against different size guys? Watching this bout, It looked to me that BJ was not very comfortable having had to bulk up to a welterweight. GSP was pretty much lean and mean by comparison and probably dropped some pounds for his fighting weight. I wonder if BJ could have had a better fight against GSP if he didn't have to "weight up" to welter-weight to fight this guy?

i think it was pretty obvious that putting on 15 pounds did not work for penn. gsp looked like a beast next to him. it is pretty hard to compete with someone that has arms 6 inches longer than you and at least 15 to 20 lbs more lean muscle than you. hats off to BJ for standing(or laying) in there as long as he did.

paddling is fun.

i had to say that since this is a paddling forum.

now i just gotta put on another 20 lbs for the relay.

Pretty funny how we are all so critical of BJ. As if we could have done a better job. The dude did his best and the way these fights work, the more trash you talk the more you get paid. damn hypocrites!

its too bad GSP's trainer applied vaseline on GS's shoulders and back in the second round. It really took away from an otherwise impressive showing. BJ Penn wasn't fighting at his optimum weight and trying to attempt a hold on someone with vaseline on their body doesn't help much either. Too bad GSP's trainer felt he needed vaseline. Would it have made a diff? Maybe and maybe not, but now it taints an otherwise impressive showing.

I think BJ is great. Fun to watch. But he said he was gonna train harder than he ever has. You think he would honestly say that? It was even on TV that he wasnt. Now GSP was getting vaseline rub downs from what looked like his boyfriend in between rounds?? Just disappointed in the lack of a great fight for what was supposed to be a once in a lifetime match up. I cant wait to see GSP fight his next fight and even better watch BJ get back to his natural weight class.

BJ paddled for Puna canoe club in the 90s

...he didnt quit....

the head trainer cut him off...thats his job, to keep it safe for the fighter..

I tell you something , that braddah fought for Hawaii...respect that.

aloha

Penn's got every right to lodge a protest on the vaseline shinanigans. It did taint the fight. As far as the outcome, who knows what could have happened? GSP's corner man should be barred and the GSP camp should be sanctioned.

GSP's an incredible talent, and BJ probably wasn't himself gaining all that weight. The odds were stacked against him, and he gave it his best, I'm sure. We're still stoked to have someone from Hawai'i among the elite in such a competitive sport! And King of Kailua, judging from your performance in that Hilo race, BJ prolly woulda beat you if he was on a Boogie board!!

That is true Jim, I got beat by a 65 year old guy! And my OC-1 nemesis once again is a women who taunts me regularly at the line up before the start and at the finish. (((sigh)))
