Outlaw Surf Coast Video.

The link will take you to my Inland Outrigger Blog and the video of the 25km downwind Outlaw Ocean Race from Anglesea to Torquay on Australia's premier surf coast, paddling past the famous Bell's Beach. This race was the culmination of a group of paddlers who saw the need for ocean racing in Victoria and then made it happen. With the support of Wade VAUTIER and his company all the permits and insurances were obtained to run this challenging race. This is the only genuine Downwind race in Victoria, Australia. Be sure to check out the backdrop from some of the scenes to appreciate our spectacular and unique coastline. We would love to see paddlers from all over the world come and experience OUTLAW.

What's with the little jaunt up the beach in the middle of the race?

That was a compulsory check point and a chance for the paddlers to display their huli skills. ...hahaha

At Point Addis we had a compulsor portage and it was also the relay changeover. The crowd loved it, I think most full distance paddlers would rather of avoided it. I came off twice cutting the reef. Great fun and no damage reported.

King, Rambo is not happy, he reckons I set it up so it looks like he had the huli. It was actually Tony Bond. On board canoes were Rambocam (blue peggie) Clarkiecam (china polly) and Bondocam (front aiko of his Hurricane so no one could see him!). Then we had Blondie doing Reefcam and Mrs Clarkie doing Beachcam. 3 GoPro Hero 3, 1 Sanyo Xacti and a Panasonic something. I was using a program called AVS Editor.

Glad you enjoyed the vid, it doesn't do the day justice. We had a great run!

Great vid Clarkie, thanks!

Whats the reason for the covers over the steering cables? Ive heard a story on here as to why but not sure if it was true.

They are the rules in Oz, no exposed nuts, bolts, cables etc all for safety, China imports have to have them. Other rules too like approved manufacturers and importers. AOCRA make them jump through quite a few hoops to get their approval then they pay for the privalege.

So the Outrigger Connection and Kai Waa canoes all have to have covers over the rudder bracket at manufacture.

Our Family Jewels and our canoe are all some of us have. ... Both are necessary for life on earth.

So the story about the guy who cam down on the tail is true?

No exposed nuts may have a duel meaning!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a two way rule though.

If you don't have the Jewels ... you don't need the cover.

Seems like some of the best comments come in the form of a 1 - 2 punch from Clarkie and Rambo! Dualing bloggers!

So do the Fusion/Fuze they sell/import over there have these covers like the Zephyr does?

Besides the few Hurricanes that I've seen and the Zephyr, the only other OC-1 I've seen that does come with covered rudder steering is the Wainui from Kia Kaha.

The only thing I dont like about the cover on my Zephyr is that you cant see the cables. Unlike the Wainui, the Zephyr's cover is attached with adhesive so its not a simple on/off process. A couple of guys here just left them off, but now theirs dont look as cool!

If/when I do need to take mine off, I was thinking if re-attaching it with some velcro would work to simplify the process. Just worried it would be easily taken off or lost doing that and would be stuck getting a mis-matched cover from Karel to replace it.

The Pegasus cover has a opening at the rear and a hole over the retaining nut. Very useful for changing to a K1 rudder for the flat. If you remove the nut (no pun intended Rambo) and push the foot pedals back the bracket and cables slip out the rear of the cover for inspection or replacement. It is just an add on that is glued over the top, not an intergrated unit like the OC canoes.

Rambo will tell you I have no use for one, he says Mrs Clarkie removed those exposed nuts years ago and they are sitting on the mantlepiece in my loungeroom. That's coming from a fencing contractor that gets his lunch made for him and breakfast in bed. Then when his wife goes to work he gets out of bed and sits at the computer whilst he eats the lunch. When was the last time you built a fence Cecil? If Mrs Rambo catches you your mantlepiece will have some new decorations as well!
