Why do you love to paddle?

Alot of the forums on here can be very controversial but I think they all stem from the fact that we all love to paddle. Just curious as to why some of you love to paddle.

I dont know why I love to paddle, I just do. I dont think about anything else when Im on the water. I feel like I get better with every session so im stoked to get out everyday and see how much better I can get. I love being on the water and the feeling of catching a wave. I think, for me, its all about catching a bump and not having to paddle for a few seconds, that the best feeling in the world to me right now.

Anyone else?

jp - you just about name all the reasons.

Paddling is 'addictive' - it must be the sensation of the glide, giving a litle rush.
Meeting other paddlers on the water is a big part of it; I do enjoy paddling alone, too, but not quite as much.

I have been around the ocean for 40 something years and used to be a hard core surfer in Hawaii until it got very crowded and not so fun anymore. I took up paddling and found that it had the same effect on me as surfing did when I enjoyed it. It's about being on the ocean. It makes me very happy and content. There's something that happens to you when you are on the ocean. I also enjoy it for the intense workouts and also the comraderie of paddling with your friends. It is addictive and if I don't get to paddle 3-4 times a week, I get a little edgy, if you know what I mean.

Everything mobetta said (except for "40 years" and "hard core"...) describes the feeling for me. There's just something about the ocean. The power and energy of the ocean seems "fix" or replenish my state of mind, and I definitely get "edgy" without it.

for me i like to paddle, because it relieves my stress, and angers, i like to put what ever i'm feeling into my paddle, to the water, and out to the ocean. i used to get super stoked off of getting a push, but now the excitement for me is when i manage to connect a few waves.

about getting edgy when you dont go padle, i remember watching an insider training show about laird hamilton, and hiswife (the hostess) said the same thing about him. that when there no waves at all, he was a horrible person to be around. i feel the same way, when i dont paddle for like 6-7 days in a row, i get super bummed, partly because i feel guilty about not training, and i just like ot catch bumps, by myself or with a team.

Funny that's a tuff one .Ive always wanted to paddle my dad was a paddler so while still in dippers I watched the men pack the long boats down to the water and all I wanted to be is one of them. I wanted people to say I was on that crew. and ever since then if it floats ill ride it. probably till my last breath. I'm rounding 45 so been out there for a while. so I'm off to paddle.

Concur with mobettatnu and all...
I love being on the water, and I love the freedom to go wherever you want in OC-1. Also enjoy the camaraderie of paddling with friends, but I also enjoy just being on the water by myself. I also love the "low impact" nature of the sport. I can't run every day because it pounds my joints, but I can paddle every day... any day I can get out of work and get on the water.

Actually I love a good run in a six man more than one manning. I think it has to do with the rythym and the feel of a good blend when we can make the boat fly with the joint power of our effort. Plus I just hate running.

I was brought up in Shepparton in Victoria, Australia. Our scout group did some touring in open canadians on three and four day camping treks. At 16 we all made our own canoes and paddled whenever we wanted. My younger brother and I used to carry the canadian to the Shepp Lake, paddle across it, walk to the Goulburn River and paddle upsteam to the Broken River junction and chuck a line in trying to catch a feed.

From their we made some whitewater slalom canoes "Olymp 75's" and took them on whitewater expeditions on most of the mountain rivers around Vic and NSW.

At nineteen I had my crack at my first Murray Marathon with a plywood double kayak, my partner had gastro and made it to the first checkpoint and I paddled to the second one on my own before withdrawing. Not a very good start but I have since completed 17 of them.

It was on one of these marathons I met a guy named Glen. Bondy and I were paddling OC1 on the flat. He talked us into joining the Geelong club and introduced us to ocean racing. Then I ran into this guy named Rambo who taught me how to paddle in the ocean.

Throughout my whole life I have been involved in paddling in one form or another and wherever I go I always make new friends, most of them for life. Now I'm all grown up and have more than a few grey whiskers and not much hair I hope to pass this passion onto a new generation. It's not that hard, we just stick them in a canoe and tell them to paddle, most keep coming back, they get it. It's just something you have to do!
