Newbie question - paddling crosswind

I usually paddle north to south in my work out through a westerly blowing wind. The intensity varies greatly. Today, blowing pretty good, small white caps. Anyway how do the all you handle paddling crosswind? Do you tuff it out having the chop and swells hit you sideways or do you use the current / swells progressing forward at a diagonal, i.e. zig zagging riding the swell for a bit then powering upwind to get back on course, repeat?

If your just out for a work out. go straight into the waves for 80% of the time you want to be out there and turn and surf back. have fun
