How's this for a turm

I shot this at the Aussie National Sprint Titles last weekend.

This is one of the best turns i have ever seen, perfect timing, simple technique, not over powered.

And these are Senior Master Women

The ass of that Mirage BURNS

That was a mean ass turn. I'm still trying to get my head around that amazing 2-person, 1-pull "kahi". Front three on the left, 4-5 on the right. Just f'ing amazing!

Seriously, how many clubs are going to give this a try now.

And the Pull - Kahi as you called it, only lasted ONE stroke.

Most men try and muscle the turn and end up bouncing the canoe which digs in as it swings around. They weren't lightweight paddlers either, so the waterline length would have been no different to the men.

Better than endless talk about technique... watch, study and learn, then practice !

For a canoe with as much rocker as that canoe has, four people turning the canoe is inefficient. Two can do it and accomplish it faster.

Care to elaborate Bill?

Thrust is lost by the four people missing those strokes. If only two execute the turn maneuver while the other four keep power on the blades, the canoe will have more forward inertia, thrust, when the stoker comes out of his/her not-more-than-3-stroke uni. The canoe has not 'sat down' while going around the flag as much as it would 'sit' while four people turn it. Thus, it will get back up to speed faster and with less tiring effort. This is made possible only by a flawless approach to the flag by the steersperson. The steerspersons approach will either make or break the turn.

That canoes (the one in the video) hull design will permit the above described turn. Other canoe designs with equal rocker as the one in the video, but with different design features, would require different techniques to accomplish an efficient turn.

i saw karel do a turn without a uni.. or poking. he just paddled on the right and ka i the boat around it was sweet !! theres so many ways to make a good turn.. just have to have the experience and knowledge..

Thanks for explaining Bill, I can see your point, but they only hold the turn strokes for the duration of one forward stroke, so it looks pretty efficient.

There must be a point where by coming into the turn too fast is a disadvantage

I see them holding the turn strokes for two forward strokes. And this is the same for #5 and 6.....four people missing two stokes while only two people pulling forward. Four people pulling forward is better than two.

Coming in to the turn too fast would not be a disadvantage if the approach was done properly. The faster my canoe approaches my flag, the better I like it. But if I blow the approach by not positioning the canoe precisely where it needs to be, I've blown the turn.

I agree the approach is the key.

And Bill i'm looking forward to my ride in the O'o when i'm next on the island after my tour of the workshop ... you haven't forgotten the invitation you extended i hope? ......hahha

Of course not. Coincidentally, I brought the 197 lb. Polynesian canoe off the rack today and took her to the beach to give visiting paddling friends from California some fun while they are here. I thought of you and the others who I've extended an invitation to back in October. I'm just waiting for you guys to show up. I'll be here. And I also recall saying your carbon paddles will be fine whether in the 197 or the O'o.
