V1 Clinic

Didn't make it to the Manutea / George clinic...
Any good? New ideas?

Three things I learned from the clinic:

1) Manutea can drink some beer!!! (If you have a flight to catch, don't sit down and drink beer with him before hand, you will guaranteed miss your flight)

2) George does not take steroids.

3) Don't forget to breathe!!!

bojo morris can drink more beer!!!

True dat... Bojo goes!!!

Oh, another thing I learned:

4) There are no secrets - no secret technique, no secret drug, no secret equipment, just the plain old timeless formula of "you gotta put the time in the canoe!!!" Plain and simple.

couple more things....

  1. Manutea's crew smokes cigars before Hawaiiki Nui races. Rumors I heard from some of the guys that came back from this year's Hawaiiki Nui. No, not that kine cigars, the other kine....:).
  2. Peter K. can hold his own with ANYBODY when it comes to drinking beer....as does the rest of team Hurricane.

One doesn't need to smoke... your mind is stronger than you think. It's a matter of will.

I know my mind is strong....

I just like to be CALMMMMMM.....

That's the formula:
Empty stomach + dehydrated + "a few" special formulated drink on green bottles + nice peps = good times = miss your flight!!!

And you blame on Manutea! poor guy!

Couple quotes from the day (paraphrased):

"Every stroke is a paddle and a correction"

"Attack upfront to knee... why are people pushing the boat down at the end of their stroke?"

"It's time in the boat"

"V1 is a complete upwind / downwind / sidewind boat"

"7 hour long practices followed by 3 days rest"

"intervals... 30 seconds on / 30 seconds off for three hours straight"

"No magic formula, find what's right for you"

"Paddlers in Tahiti have jobs [but they are 'French jobs' so they are kind of flexible]"

Do the Big Island Race OC1 V1... should be amazing.

Here are some of the other quotes I remembered from the clinic:

1) "Ne pas apporter votre coude trop loin en arrière."
2) "I lift mostly legs and core"
3) "...stay smooth, don't tense up"
4) "Sors de mon chemin - Ne pas frapper ma pirogue."

OK, that's all I remembered - hope this helps KailuaBoy.

RachetJaws,

Thanks for the vote of confidence. True, I'd like to think I can hold my own with most all beers. Except if it is "Bud Ice". Only Moloka'i guys can handle that!!!

...IwouldGo,

The formula you mentioned above is I think Newton's 4th law of physics. Unfortunately, through many years of "accidental" testing and "un-controlled" experiments, I have found that law to be in fact true!

Kapono, did you say "7 hour practices and 3 days rest"? Sounds crazy, but that's exactly what I heard Serge Corbin, Canadian Marathon legend has said. "You need the 6-7 hr. Sundays". Do these guys have wives?

Jim,
Ya... 7 hours on... 3 days off for two months to prepare for the Bora-Bora Iron Man.
(At race pace for 7 hours).
But again, he (George) and Manutea said it wasn't secret training... it's just time on the water.
But ya, that's a lot of 'time on the water'

so is blogger a compliment, a jab, or just a label?

also, when Georges said he "rests" for three days, those three days each have at least an hour of paddling, plus lifting running etc.

he has no off days.

7hr paddle at race pace seems like a monumental workout, if it was done at an honest race pace. Were they continous race pace for 7hr or was there a lot of long intervals with quick recoveries ? Regardless, doubtful many athletes can perform such training. Those guys are impressive.

#18 Tue, 02/24/2009 - 2:49pm

They were training for a 5hours race... so "race pace" for that event is not the same "race pace" one would adopt for a 1hour race...
What they meant was paddling for 7hours as strong as you would if you knew you would stop after 5hours...

#19 Tue, 02/24/2009 - 5:58pm

I understand the part about the race pace being a long-duration as oppose to 1hr race pace. I thought it was a pace for a 7hr pace...but a 5hr race pace workout for 7hrs duration is even more impressive and I still think that not many people can do that, much less benefit from that type of training without falling apart. Really a testament to their hard work, talent, ability and heart.

You'e right ! and not much people do it ;-)
A friend who trained 7 hours on saturdays for 4 weeks before the race told me that when he crossed the finish line he felt like he was capable of paddling for a couple more kms... (he finished around 50th).
