Job offers should be lining up after that one Cecil, big thumbs up, well done!

#2 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 11:22am

Hmm is it just me or does it look like that gray boat in the back is making some wake for the dude?

#3 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 11:47am

The grey boat is at least 100 metres away, the zoom brings the background closer.

The full version is available on DVD in Hi Def if anyone wants them - $20 Aussie plus postage.

Cheers and thanks for the encouragement.

100 m away? No way, that thing gets closer than that. around 12 minutes it gets pretty close.

#5 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 12:02pm

He's not riding wake PooPoo, he's riding ocean swell.

#6 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 12:10pm

just a little suspect to me. It makes a few circles around...

#7 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 12:45pm

From what I saw there was a guy filming on that boat as well. Probably trying to outdo Rambo and get the best shots!

#8 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 12:52pm

The other boat had a photographer shooting stills and a Discovery Channel video cameraman (also in a chopper as well). At the presentations we compared footage. Yep all agreed part time hack Ramboscie had the cream .....hahaha

Hey Cecil, it's 10.08am Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time, why aren't you out building a fence or something!

#10 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 1:08pm

What would you rather do.... shoot riggers or shoot nails?

#11 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 1:23pm

Nah they were secretly hired to make wake for Robbo. I'm sure of it...

#12 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 1:27pm

I have to agree with PPP,

That guy looks totally out of shape and way slow. The only way he won was by help.

I know he is a former Olympic Gold Medal winner, but we know that after they win they just-

Hit the bong
Smoke the weed
Drink
Hang out with college age chicks
and Hit the Bong

#13 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 1:37pm

my favorite part is about 54 seconds in. so much to look at here. one guy without pants on the left. and then there are the two guys on the right. what the hell is going on there? all i can say is someone's a big fan of speedo's and it's not the guy wearing em.

Alt text

oh yeah, awesome vid rambo. you da man.

#14 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 2:07pm

Wow-that guy's amazing. Robbo, I mean. The guy with the blue and white speedos isn't too shabby, either, I reckon. Absolutely zero self-conciousness there.

Are you confusing an aussie icon with an American swimming star! (ouch, I can feel the comeback already) !@#$

Guys,
Welcome to the home of the budgie smugglers.
we wear em pride in Oz.
And when you row a surf boat you pull'em up your crack.
But that's a mans game that a lot of foreigners don't understand.
RAMBO fantastic vid and let's see more , can't wait to see the Jnr vid.
Know he wasn't well but from what i saw in the shorts he looks like he handled it well.

Just a little American Humor! It was more of an attack on our Olympic "Hero"

Your Aussie Icon can obviously smash everyone and is a great person and we can only hope he doesn't take up outrigger.

Many of our US athletes just lie about steroids, that they are not in it for the money, and when they are caught blame others.

#18 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 3:30pm

Robbo has had a crack at OC6 paddling, was in the winning Molokai crew 1992.

#19 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 3:45pm

and has done Hammo as well.

He's a family man now and after the Doctor race said he couldn't wait to get home to see them. I spoke to him at the presentations about the video i took of him and how awesome he looked (he gives the thumbs up in the vid just after he enquired about how far in front he was), all he wanted to talk about was his new kid, very humble awesome bloke. There's a lot to learn from people like that.

Great stuff Rambo - I remain very impressed with your camera set up. Did you use your flywheel stabilizer a lot ?

#21 Wed, 02/18/2009 - 7:32pm

Permanently mounted on the wheel. When i want better audio i just take off the front protective lens. Mind you i have been practicing a lot, it ain't easy.

Now all i need is another job to video.

Molo Solo ? .... Manny it's only a plane fare?

Just in case you guys are wondering what the Bon Scott memorial photo is at the end of the video. That is the burial ground in Perth of the original AC/DC lead singer. I also took a photo of a huge head painting of Bon that a Graffiti artist had done on a concrete wall under the bridge of over the Swan rive. It was so good the WA Government decided to leave it.

Unfortunately i deleted the photo.

jc9 0: "Without pants?" Why, that's the real traditional way of paddling canoe and surfing. You paddled naked and stored your malo in the umeke. No back flap too.

#26 Thu, 02/19/2009 - 12:15am

umeke = bowl

malo = loin cloth

Don't panic it's not the Karel video yet ...haha

As you know I'm constantly working on ways to improve video footage shot from moving boats or Jet Ski's, so i thought i would share with you the results of a script I've written for my camera program to stabilize extremely shaky footage, and I'm happy to say it works fantastic considering the boat is moving at 25 - 30 kph and the camera is hand held in a fig rig.

This next short video sample is a split screen format with the original footage on the left and the Stabilized on the right.

Cheers Rambo

Phenomenal. I'd bet you could copyright your code and sell it to GoPro! It'll probably fund at least a year's worth of your traveling/filming excursions. Of course I'm sure you're already sponsored by them, if not you should be.

Thanks for all your hard work and contributions Rambo.

If only GoPro made Hi Def Cams ... i wish. No the script is for my Canon Hi Def Cams which are replacing the GoPro's as POV cams on the OC1/6.

Thanks for your kudos Haggan

Hey Rambo: any chance of scabbing on an iako and ama on Robbo's V-10 ski? Wonder how it would perform as a OC-1 conversion? Just curious? Think Epic will come out with a OC-1 version of their own?

#33 Thu, 02/26/2009 - 10:32am

I think people have already slapped an ama on a surfski. Its called the OC-1.

#34 Thu, 02/26/2009 - 11:19am

Actually Koa, thinking that myself when i study the way that V10 moves thru the water, it cuts like a knife and doesn't bob up and down and lose speed at all. Epic have done their R and D very well indeed. I would love to profile the hull and drop it into Kayak Foundry to compare the hydrostatics with say a Zephyr.

I'm guessing an Ama has much more total drag over an average run, than the extra beam or surface area built into a V10 for primary stability.

Certainly if i was designing a new OC1, i would be having a very close look at the V10.

I have fully stabilized the entire 5 mins of the "Robbo" footage, zoomed it and slowed it down to 1/4 the speed, the ski runs into every low spot or hole within it's vicinity, "Robbo's" skill on the ocean is extraordinary and should be after 25 years of chasing bumps. I'll put that footage up soon after all the DVDs are shipped.

Rambo

#35 Thu, 02/26/2009 - 11:35am

the V10 has a big flat spot behind where you sit. I love how they made them . very well made.

#36 Thu, 02/26/2009 - 11:33am

Yeah, but got to figure them skis catch a different wave then we do, so even with my low level beginner skills, I won't be able to get that quick 1 and 2 stroke follow up that the kayakers have; They can take 2 strokes to my one and be sloppy with their strokes too. Now I wonder how that V-10 compares with the Hayden Molokai Robbo normally paddles? Oscar must of noticed something out in the Channel when Robbo would drop in and bump the shorter Hayden physically against his? I think it was something about the Hayden not having the glide capacity to keep up and that Robbo had to work harder to stay with him? So if Robbo was on his ski, he'd blow everybody away and probably set a new Molokai record? Guess Oscar has got himself a horse for the Molokai with a new record in mind as the goal? Anyway, maybe that's the thinking of the design of the new Karel canoe? But don't the Huki's look similar with the wave parting bow?

#37 Thu, 02/26/2009 - 2:13pm

I dunno bout now but it used to be the oc-1 hulls themselves were faster than surfskis because you didn't have to worry about balance with there being an ama. oc-1s could be narrower and faster. surfskis had to be wider to balance.

People have tried slapping an ama onto surfskis only to find that they have made a really really awkward boat.

Stroke count on a surfski makes a huge difference in the surf. HUGE. I'd be willing to go as far as saying they surf better than oc-1's not because of the design but because the paddler can get a much higher stroke count.

But today things might be different. I've been out of the loop.

#38 Thu, 02/26/2009 - 3:18pm

There is a big difference now between the older "spec" ski (18ft ) and the newer ocean kayak type skis. Yes i agree 2 strokes to our 1 makes a huge difference to maintaining speed.

The fact that we race Oc1 rather than just paddle for fun, means we are always on the lookout to go faster, whether that be as a paddler or when purchasing a canoe. So looking into similar sports who may or may not be more advanced, could reveal some useful information.

How much further designs can advance who knows, i guess they will, as they always have up till now, as has paddlers fitness and training techniques.

There is the possibility to..... and I know this is a repeat of what has already been said, but I havent seen it done yet, so must conclude that it needs repeating..............to stick a miniature outrigger assembly onto a surfski. It can be so small that it is barely noticed, so it shouldn't be awkward in any way.
Superior performance in rough water downwind, lower cost, easier storage and transport are all to be gained....... whats the problem, the hull type has been adopted for the benefit offered, so why not the blade as well.

#40 Thu, 02/26/2009 - 5:56pm

goodwaka, already been done, the training wheels that Jude makes for his skis.

#41 Fri, 02/27/2009 - 6:03am

yeah and it also called an ama

#42 Fri, 02/27/2009 - 8:18am

right too ! have only just seen it......but the price is about 1000$ US, which makes it nearly double the amount when imported here.

I had imagined something much smaller and 'traditional' , which was only just poking out on the left side.

#43 Fri, 02/27/2009 - 8:56am

Huki's "gull wing" training wheels for skis is a cool idea. For sure anyone using it will get shit from other paddlers, but it should speed up the learning curve, and get a lot more people to try skis, especially in areas with cold or rough water.

#44 Fri, 02/27/2009 - 8:59am

I see it as a great tool to get disabled paddlers on the water.
