Renowned Paddler in Accident

Filed in

Last Wednesday or Thursday Leighton Look was diving off Hawaii Kai. I not sure of the exact details, but he was rushed to Kuakini hospital and is in very bad shape. I've heard varying accounts to his prognosis, but I just wanted to get the word out and hope that everyone say a little prayer for him and hope that he pulls through.

Leighton is in intensive care with a severe case of the bends. It's too early for a definitive prognosis but Leighton is a real fighter.
Also, not only do Leighton and his brother Les make great paddles but Leighton also built Tarita, Hui Lanakilas Koa canoe. Not only a legendary paddler but a very talented craftsman

Our prayers are definitely with Leighton at this time.....please keep us posted of his conditions. He has contributed so much to the paddling community and has touched so many in different ways. Kauai sends our prayers to Leighton as well as Les who is probably going crazy with worry. Joy

Mahalo Keizo for the post. We cannot say enough about how great a guy Leighton Look is......pure talent, knowledge, experience, whitty as we all know & such a great dad. He never hessitates to share any of this with you, he gave us both our first paddles. To have both recently done the E Lau Hoe & Henry Ayau races in our koa canoe "Tarita" (named after his daughter), was such an honor for the both of us. He is in dire need all of our prayers. For those who love this sport, for those who could not live without being on the water......please say a prayer for Leighton every moment the ocean comes to your mind. We speak for the rest of my ohana at Hui Lanakila Canoe Club.....Mahalo Nui. Aloha....Leia & Gavin

Iam not sure what to say about Leighton's accident Iam still in a little shock after visiting him in the hospital. This past season was my first full season paddling with Hui lanakila and I was lucky enough to have leighton as my steersman. It was without a doubt the funnest year in my short paddling carrer. I think about leighton when I am on a bump while riding my OC-1,when I eat poke after paddling and when I am near the ocean and I pray every day that I will be able to hear leighton laughing in the back steering the canoe that I am in.

Leighton is Hui Lanakila. Yama and I have him in our prayers everyday. Hui Lanakila was my first paddling club and Leighton has not changed at all from the first day that I met him. Forever young. Again our hearts and prayers are with him. Adrienne & Yama

kainoa...keizo. so far, here's the info i got on the race. December 4th, Saturday. It's a hawaii kai run to hui lanakila's site. $30 per includes tshirt and lunch....maybe more. OC-1, OC-2, kayak, and OC-6 races may be staggard starts, all around 8-9ish.... The final details should be decided this week...i believe kanaka ikaika is helping out also. Let's get the word out mainly on the date. With everyone's help, this can be the race of the year. Keep the prayers going....mahalo! Leia

Thank you to ocpaddler.com and all of those who have sent in comments regarding Leighton. The support that Leighton and our family has received from his friends and the paddling community has been overwhelming and we are appreciative of the positive comments that everyone has to say about him. Leighton is making slow but steady progress in his recovery however it is too early to determine what his permanent situation will be. There is a nice article on Leighton in today's Advertiser which lists some of the fundraising events that are being put on to assist Leighton. Again, we thank you for your prayers during this difficult time Leighton and our lives. Mahalo from the Look family..

Mahalo Keizo for posting Leightons story on your site. I started paddling again in 96 and was fortunate to train under the guidance of Leighton, Raven, and Jon of Hui Lanakila. Two days before this yrs Molokai Hoe, I called Leight as I drove past Margaritaville in Newport Beach (big party after the Catalina Crossing - thats all Ill say) and I promised him that, although I wouldnt be able to paddle with him on another Catalina Crossing, Ill escort him this coming yr. He promised to come out again and Im holding him to it. Leighton's a fighter and I know he's going to be back out on the water with his dried fish and Bud Lights. I want Les and the Look family to know that you are all in my prayers.
Aloha,
Eddie McGowan
