CAD software - Rambo

Rambo man...what was the name of the CAD software you were using to design your 2 man?? If I remember correctly from earlier posts, you said that you downloaded the software for free??

Yep that's the one, it's actually very good and quick and surprisingly accurate. No CAD knowledge needed, just draw dots and the program scribes curves and gives you hydrostatic data on the fly.

When your happy with the design print out the profiles, cut matching timber stations and mount on a strong back.

anyone know if there is free software like this i can run on native mac OS without having to use bootcamp or parallels?

Nope, it doesn't need much of a PC to run the program, so any old Pentium 3 will do, it's not a number cruncher.

Big Mahalo's to everyone. Just love the ohana on this board. Question....can the software put CHINES on the boat? :)...

Yes it can, the chines will appear in the plan view and profile. I believe the program can also adjust the drag data when the chines are inserted so you can see their effect on drag.

What i love about this program is you can set a max hull speed point where the hull will be at it's most efficient and design the boat around this parameter. Then have a secondary parameter, where the canoe will run efficient at surfing speed and adjust to balance between the two.

Cool

Here's my 2 man again

its a beauty!!!!!

It also is still not finished.... one day

It's optimized to carry two 70kg paddlers.

Obviously the deck will be different but basically every thing from the sheer line down is usable and most of the deck except where the iakos are added.

Whoa Rambo, you one smart bugga....I downloaded the software, was playing with it a bit. Also printed up the manual and have some reading material for tonight at home.

You did a great job on your boat. Right now all this stuff is so cosmic to me, but I going start reading the manual and try go from there. Looks like you have this software nailed!! I may be asking you questions on occasion.

You have any suggestions on how to start for a rookie?? I have basic idea's...numbers...just need to figure out how to input them and manipulating.

Start with the basic default canoe and rough up a design with the mouse drawing curves using dot points and inserting the user changeable data in the Hydrostatic page. (ie paddler design weight and principle dimensions) Then you can use the advanced features Zoom, Scale and Exaggerate to fair up the design and make nice flowing lines. All the time keeping an eye on the Hydrostatic data to keep it efficient, especially the coefficients.

Try moving the waterline up and down and observe the changes in the Drag data page, change the rocker etc.

One thing to remember when designing a boat .......water hates straight lines !!!

F&%K Rambo, I just wasted a full day at work!! This thing is frick'n awesome!! Only thing is, I don't know a damn thing about hydrodynamics....coefficiencies, wet water lines, drag dynamics....I finally was able to move lines around and have a very crude mock up for a canoe I was thinking about.

Can you give me some basic stuff to watch for?

The more you play Jaws the more is revealed to you by the program as you go looking through the menus. The manual tells you how to rough out and then fair up in the different elevations and profiles. Just keep saving what you create in steps as version 1.yak ,version2.yak, version3.yak, etc that way it evolves and you can keep going back to an earlier version if need be.

Do a little reading on Coefficients and the magic range you should aim for, they are probably THE most important parameters to get right. You can see the effect a poorly faired hull has on drag in the drag window. Take not of any red lines or areas as the program is telling you that section is not fair or uniform.

I like to get a design that looks to work well in flat water first, then factor in surfing theories.

If you go to the Kayak foundry Forum, you can download other peoples designs that have been saved as .yak files and modify them as a short cut. Post your own yak file design there also and ask for feedback, quit often someone will download your file, modify it, and post back to you improved.

Forum is here http://www.blueheronkayaks.com/phpBB2/index.php

Have fun

Rambo where do you set the target hull speed? I think I'm missing that somewhere.
Mahalo in advance.
