You can also use hose clamps, large zip ties (those bigger ones like they use for flexcuffs), or bungy cord to secure the pvc pipe/pole holder onto the iako.

Use a nylon rope to tie to the fishing rod/reel and to the iako so you don't lose/drop the pole when a fish strikes.

Now that is a serious fish!

There was an article in an old Kanu Culture volume about fishing from an OC1.......it had pics of the set-up.......if I recall, this guy used 2 lengths of electrical conduit pvc pipe....he made it into a rectangular frame probably about 12 inches wide by whatever the distance was to span from the front to the back iako..........in the middle he fixed his rod mount.......there's a photo of a 35lb trevally strapped to the deck of his OC1!..........mmmm.......might give it a go!

The pvc pipe with bike tire inner tube is how I do mine. My back iako has a good upper angle already so I strap it right to the iako.
Have yet to even get a bite but I set the drag fairly lose so as not to rip out the iako. Only trolling for now as I go for a paddle. I working on an older canoe from Karel's Fiberglass. The iakos are wooden and identical so I'm going to tie two other crossbars and make like a hammock style luggage area. Hope it helps.

That looks like a good time !!!! Ive never fished from an OC1 , Im thinking this may be the year . My canoe has a long vertical component to the rear iako too so, will go with the PVC pipe and Hawaiian clamp arrangement.

Many thanks for posting that VERY cool video....

Wow!!!!!!!!!!! That ulua video just blew me away. Woderful, just wonderful. There's more to paddling than just racing?

When it comes to OC-1 fishing, Lanikai's Colin Perry is the man who pioneered the sport. He use to maintain a fantastic web site devoted strictly to the sport with similar pictures only and not videos. If anyone knows him real well, and can borrow his photos and script to post on this site, it would be wonderful. Last time I heard, he was out somewhere in Ewa Beach? Think about it, why waste hours of training and have nothing to show, when you can fish at the same time and put food on the table? This way, you can justify and easily do the 20+ hours a week necessary to be at the front of the pack?

ps: I hear canoe designer John Martin in Kaneohe specializes in OC-1 fishing?

oc-1's really aren't the best craft for fishing. You guys should checkout kayak fishing. Its a growing sport and the catch some big time fish.

Eh! That's how come I get one Scupper for. But I like the video and the footwork on the ama can really help reel in the beeg ones. So now I'm trying to figure out how for put one captain's style swivel chair on top my canoe for go whipping on the reef away from all the fly fisherman.
