I am 16 and have been training for Molokai on a ski, but don’t have the money for a escort boat and all the other expenses. Whenever I ask people about grants or sponsorships all they tell me is that I just have to ask people.

It's great that you are preparing for Moloka'i!
It may be a little late in the game for this 2009 run so those people you ask may be right! For next year, think about fund raising early on:
huli huli chicken
steak fry
car wash
benefit auction
garage sale
bake sale
print and sell stickers/t-shirts
etc.
Canoe clubs, and other non-profit organizations should have some experience with these kinds of $$ generators. You may also find someone in this network that is good at soliciting grants so get out there and network! Maybe you know someone in the advertising business who might be interested in contributing as a sponsor? Start a web page or wiki so interested people can track your progress, make contributions, and so you can document the activity.

If your training on a ski then maybe post something on surfski.info as well or while I prefer Fenn's much more myself, Epic Kayaks has been greatly promoting juniors racing ski's here in Southern California, maybe give them a call...
