They must have just changed it today as it was still on last night when I checked.
I know some people were bummed when races are on Saturday as not everyone has Saturdays off for work.

Any idea why? I'm flying out from CA on Tuesday and thats the only race that I can do while I'm there. Its not the sole purpose for my trip so its alright but canceling a race this close to it seems unusual?
#2 Thu, 03/19/2009 - 5:14pm
wtf!!! thats so dumb. im pissed...
#3 Thu, 03/19/2009 - 6:20pm
I just hope that there weren't people from farther away who were coming and hoping to do that race...
#4 Thu, 03/19/2009 - 6:31pm
Just spoke to Jon Emerson and it's canceled, folks. Suuuuper junk cuz my partner already bought her flight to come in from Maui. Reason? Not enough people enter in years past and K.I. has had a tough season thus far....aka not enough money being made. Fuckin' LAME to cancel a race last minute like this.
#5 Thu, 03/19/2009 - 8:15pm
Jooooooliaan!!
#6 Fri, 03/20/2009 - 4:58am
Bad practice to cancel a race because of low turnout.
Racing isn`t about turnout, its about competition.
and when two boats are on the water a race usually ensues....
#7 Fri, 03/20/2009 - 5:13am
support your local race organizations dammit!!!
#8 Fri, 03/20/2009 - 7:49am
ok guys, lets take it easy here, yes it is a bummer that the race was cancelled but there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. yes it is a bummer that people are making trips but there are so many races this year on the schedule that 1 not there would not hurt.
#9 Fri, 03/20/2009 - 8:43am
do it as a fun run! Get everyone together who wants to play and have fun. No need all the official stuff. Keep your own times or have a friend on the beach take down finish times. Assign someone to buy the beer, beverages, poki and Costco Pizza and you will have more fun than an official race. This is what it is all about!!! And then post the unoffical results here. Have fun.
#10 Fri, 03/20/2009 - 8:00pm
Plus you'lll save a lot of money by not paying an entry fee - use it to buy more beer and pupu's - more fun. You'll need a designated driver in stead of escort boats. Be safe!

paddlefast, are you from Maine , thats the way we think over here..... good on you .
#12 Sat, 03/21/2009 - 12:47am
not from Maine- too cold. I give you guys on the mainland especially Maine credit for paddling in cold weather.
I am lucky to live on a neighbor island in Hawaii where its all about fun- heck we have had more people come out for a fun run than some of our races. What is this sport about anyway? FUN!!! All you need is a bunch of stoked paddlers, a good surf run, beverages and some good grinds and it is a great day!
I look forward to Jaimie and crew to put on a fun coastal relay and show the "official" guys in it for the money what it is all about. Jaimie- let us know how your coastal relay turns out.
When the sport becomes too technical and people thinking only the latest and greatest canoe or whatever (tennis racket, skis etc) makes a great difference and people stay in their own "in" groups instead of everyone hanging out together, then it stops being fun and the sport dies. We need to keep the aloha and the fun in it - there is too much other B.S. out there to deal with and paddling is supposed to give us a break from all the crap. I love paddling because we can all be together as one group after a great time on the ocean- from the people with only aloha to give to the big bucks guys. It is only those that are so "full of themselves" that make any sport a drag. So bottom line, have fun and show aloha!

paddlefast,
You are to be commended on your last post.

Life for some during these economic times must be pretty sweet when all you can do is bitch about the hardship of a canoe race being cancelled. I've no idea why Kanaka Ikaika, or BeachBoys cancelled. If you still have a job, can pay your rent, the kids tuition, etc., then I guess you're qualified to carry on about the emotional and financial hardships you are experiencing by these cancellations. Many out there should be so fucking lucky.
#19 Sat, 03/21/2009 - 7:50pm
also well said, KGB.
#20 Sat, 03/21/2009 - 9:27pm
Wow, hard to believe. Good one KGB.
Finally, some sound reasoning, real world common sense.
If anyone really believes that the people who organize these races are in it for the money.
Think again.
The blood, sweat, and tears by some pretty unselfish people who organize these things (safety is always tops on their list), are grateful if they break even.
The economy is in some uncharted water my friends.
Boat captains won't be as ready, willing, and able to put it all on the line anymore either, since one of them has now been sued, and after reading some of the super petty comments which have been posted recently regarding how "selfish" they are.
Have fun when paddling, but if you put something together and call it a race or anything that even smells like one, I hope for your sake no one gets injured or killed.
Be forwarned that there are many rules and regulations most people are unaware of until things go terribly wrong.
Hooray for those who are willing to organize these races.
You don't think they felt bad that they had to cancel a race at the last minute?
Like KGB said, some people are in dire straits right now because of the economy.
Be happy you still can go out and paddle, for some right now, it's the last thing on their mind.
Putting food on the table is.

As much as this guy annoys me he is right. Its not like a race organizer just decided to cancel cuz they were over it. Things happen.
#22 Sat, 03/21/2009 - 11:24pm
