#1 Tue, 03/24/2009 - 9:13pm

I would throw Jimmy Boy Austin's name in there as well. He is lighting it up this year.

And....you can never ever count Mike "the original Whale Rider" Judd out of the equation as well. I see his name popping up in the results. Mike will be in the mix.

I like how luke and kelly are jumbled into one person in this thread. Funny.

#10 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 8:53am

#11 Wed, 04/01/2009 - 8:16am

About Maui Boyzzz,

Kai Barlett
Mael Carey
Tyson Kubo
Felipe Gomes
Peter Konohia
Kekoa Cramer

Good luck to all.

#12 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 3:25pm

The battle is going to be between Kai and Danny for first. Kai has the edge since he loves in Hawaii and has won three times, but Danny has been the closest competition to him this year. If George C or Manutea O come over they are a threat, "If they could keep up with Mael in flat water on a boat they have never used while they were out of shape..."

Mael, Manny, Jimmy, Luke, Kelly, Napoleon, Creps...

and I could have sworn I saw Jr on the Osprey more than once while I was out practicing.

#13 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 6:57pm

My money this year is on big water. With that in mind, I'll go with Lauren Bartlett's husband and the kid from Hookipa Pl.

#14 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 7:37pm

What about Noe, Andrea Moller and Margie K? Lori is good but if there is surf there's no contest against the more experiences gals.

#15 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 8:21pm

Sorry, forgot about them. If they do the race they're sure to be at the front of the pack. But I wouldn't say "there's no contest against the more experienced gals".These days, you never know. A lot of new names have been replacing the older names this season. Experience will help a lot, but I wouldn't count out the young and hungry.

#16 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 9:11pm

if its blowing trades and KArel Jr doesn't come out at the last minute my call is Kea in the top five - Tbear will be right there as well:
Men: Women:
Kai Lauren
Aaron Andrea
Danny Dane Ward
Kea Emili
Mike Judd Noe
Mael MArgie K

#17 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 9:18pm

Kai is going to win, with Danny close behind.

The battle for the next 15 spots will be awesome.

As for the women, Lauren by far. The next couple of spots depend on who actually lines up on the line that day. Lori is one to look out for though for sure.

#18 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 9:20pm

pretty biased picks there julz87

#19 Mon, 03/30/2009 - 9:25pm

Surf, Aaron Napoleon. Flat, Kai.

Spoiler: Luke or Kelly
Dark Horse: Peter Konohia or Crepps

If he was competing: Pat Dolan will win it.

Carlton

save la'au point.

#24 Tue, 03/31/2009 - 12:20pm

#25 Tue, 03/31/2009 - 4:17pm

Never underestimate da Hawaiian:
1. Kekoa Bruhn (I get one secret weapon. High blood pressure.)
2. Aaron Creps (sorry but since you not on the Hurricane, the best wa'a in the water, you no can win. No offense Botlett. Does Jim and John read this? I hope.)
3. Manny Kulukulualani. What a brada
4. Kai Bartlett (you going get your wifes ipod on and get all the mahu songs. Loose track and end up going to Kauai)
5. Danny Ching
6. Mael Carey
7. Keola Wright (surfs like Junior)
8. Tapa Worthington
9. Kea Paiaina
10. Mike Judd DON'T TEASE THE GARMIN.

#26 Wed, 04/01/2009 - 12:54am

#31 Wed, 04/01/2009 - 6:59pm

koa u funneh

#32 Wed, 04/01/2009 - 9:00pm

GLENN WILLIAMS cuz he get one young girlfriend which put a pep in his step...

#33 Wed, 04/01/2009 - 9:38pm

what about alana frazier, shes been placing the last few years.

#34 Thu, 04/02/2009 - 8:57pm

If the ocean is big, and she's on a responsive and fast surfing canoe, then my bet is on Jessie Eames. An alert crew, coupled with an experienced escort boat captain should do it for her. Check the Keokea 09 results, the wahine can paddle.

#35 Thu, 04/02/2009 - 9:49pm

After seeing the wahine paddlers on the PA`A site...
Best bet is that Lauren will win for sure, but the rest of the placing is up for grabs. The competition looks tight. It should be a super exciting race.

#36 Sat, 04/04/2009 - 4:28pm

KEKAMA AKANA if he entered cuz he mops me when he is only going at 70 percent!

#37 Sun, 04/05/2009 - 5:10pm

HAHAHA. yea he mops us all at 70 every time

#38 Sun, 04/05/2009 - 6:26pm

too bad he races short course. at 70% haha

#39 Sun, 04/05/2009 - 6:38pm

hahaha. You mean special olympics right?

#40 Sun, 04/05/2009 - 6:40pm

smart course is the correct terminology i believe

#41 Sun, 04/05/2009 - 6:42pm

vanzhappy: Lauren is in a league by her self, a world class Olympic qualified paddler. Her success has motivated many gals to advance to higher levels. Sonia Lambert and Loretta Toth (partners in the relay) paved the way thirteen (13) years ago in "ironmaning" The Channel on OC-1s. Today, it's wonderful that we can discuss the many gals who might win the title.

#42 Mon, 04/06/2009 - 11:17am

Only seven (7) seconds separated 1st and 2nd place in the Womens Division of the State Championship. Now that's some race! Can't wait for the Solo Molo to start.

#43 Thu, 04/09/2009 - 12:46am

I see Kai winning it, but wasn't there talk of some Tahitians maybe coming for this race. Also I believe Greg Long from Australia will be on a Scorpius this year. Truly anything can happen in the Channel.

#44 Thu, 04/09/2009 - 5:40am

Manny just sent out the list of competitors (waivers and registration) email, and Lewis Laughlin is on the list...

#45 Thu, 04/09/2009 - 8:09pm

Sorry konaJ won't in the channel this year, work committments got in the way, should be a great race though with a super strong field. Good luck to all.
Longy

#46 Thu, 04/09/2009 - 9:57pm

From what I hear Karel is not going to race. Would the predictions change without him, but now with Lewis entered?

#47 Fri, 04/10/2009 - 6:37pm

What ya recon about Lewis from Tahiti ....he can paddle...

#48 Sun, 04/12/2009 - 7:55pm

too early to tell from the weather predictions posted on windguru... results tbd...

#49 Sun, 04/12/2009 - 9:50pm

I'm wondering what canoe that Aussie Mike Mills-Thom will be paddling? Could it be a narrowed and elongated Renegade surfski outfitted with ama and iako?

#50 Mon, 04/13/2009 - 10:25am

For the men's division and overall winner, the paddler from Portugal going win.

#51 Tue, 04/14/2009 - 10:33am

Son of Tangaroa, you are of course right in saying that" Lewis can paddle"
he has won multiple Molokai races on both ski and oc6 and is rightly a legend in Tahitian paddling and he wouldnt be entering unless he thought that he had a good chance of winning.
I wonder which canoe he will paddle?
Its going to be interesting
There was talk of Manutea going as well, whats the score Hiro?are there any more Tahitians going over?

#52 Tue, 04/14/2009 - 11:39pm

Great to see some tahitian paddlers in the molo!!
3 frenchies are in the race too, go guys !

#53 Wed, 04/15/2009 - 5:30am

with 6 mph winds, a rudderless could run away with it...

edit:

whoops wind guru changed, now its calling for 14 mph WSW winds. uh oh. hope it changes again before sunday.

#54 Wed, 04/15/2009 - 7:42am

jc9: With that kind of wind, more better they reverse the course (Oahu to Molokai)

#55 Wed, 04/15/2009 - 8:45am

Don't know... Manutea is moving a lot : races in New Caledonia, Rarotoa, ... and in Tahiti Lewis is mostly doing surfski races.

#56 Wed, 04/15/2009 - 9:53am

Okay, with the conditions like this, I think it's anybodys race now. Lewis,Danny, Mael, Jimmy, Kai, Luke, Tapa, Aaron, Kea, Abbey, Simeon, Kelly, Kea, Tbear, Manny, and Maui, all have a shot at winning it. It's so hard to guess a guarunteed winner.

As exciting as this is to us paddlers, it really is a shame that the rest of Hawaii dosen't get how big this race is. What these athletes are about to do on sunday is a great event. The fact that sunday will determine who is the baddest mutha***** in paddling should be a big deal in the world of sports. Yet we don't get any coverage in the news except for a little article at the bottom of the sports page (which is greatly appreciated). This huge group of athletes don't get the recognition they desreve outside of just our small paddling community. Danny Ching is an amazing athlete. Kai Bartlett is an amazing athlete. Lauren Bartlett is an amazing athlete. Everyone who finishes this race on sunday is an amazing athlete. You are all greatly appreciated, and deserve a standing ovation for your accomplishment on sunday. Good luck to you all.

#57 Fri, 04/17/2009 - 10:34am

yeah McLovin!
everybody crossing the Kaiwi this sunday is WAY BEYOND MOST MORTALS (US) DREAMS......

RUSH'EM GANGE!

#58 Fri, 04/17/2009 - 10:56am

I completely agree, good luck to everyone this weekend, without surf it just a battle of endurance, training and heart.
Best of luck to you all, see ya next year!!

#59 Fri, 04/17/2009 - 5:17pm

Hope Lewis will do great... and then blow everyone in the Epic surfski crossing next month !

Fa'aitoito Lewis et Manutea. Motrez leur de quoi vous ĂȘtes capables. DĂ©chirez tout !

#60 Fri, 04/17/2009 - 5:57pm

With the predicted conditions the way they are I'd say it's chingys race. Of all the years this one is his best chance yet. Still rooting for mael and all my KAMANU boys. Shoots then going to bed and molo in the morning. See u all at the shack on Sunday.

#61 Fri, 04/17/2009 - 11:17pm

I wonder if any V-1's are entered? Weather conditions should be ideal for them? Perhaps Mael would do it? It's been a long time since Kevin and Karel, Sr. both did it rudderless.

#62 Sat, 04/18/2009 - 2:05am

Good Luck and Good Vibes to all on the water on Sunday!
