New Huki Design

Look through the Huki bargain page a lot just for kicks. There are pictured two 09 X's that in design look very much like the new Osprey... much lowered cockpit with higher gunwales and a pinched in footwell. Of course, can't find out a darned thing on Huki's webpage about the new design (whether it will be across the board or just on the X model). I wonder why they went to a similar design and when they did it? Anyone? If you lower the seat as much as is pictured, is it easier on the lower back? Also, how do you get the seat area to drain?

I'm not convinced a lowered seat is the best thing design wise. Take a look at the angle of attack someone on a Hurricane gets compared with someone on a more recessed seated canoe. I think a big bonus on the Hurricane design is it allows for a more forward and direct initial plunge compared to other more recessed designs which may not be utilizing that powerful initial dip to the best advantage.

The X has been out for a couple of years.

mojohojo...
Yes, it has, but look at the new 09 on the bargains page... quite a different canoe.

New design absolutely.
I paddled V-1X before and the seat area was not recessed.
I think it is better because I found myself a little too high in older style V1-X. Based on my weight and size, of course.

catdailey...
your right.Did not look at it close enogh. I like the lower cockpit. It allows you to have more ama control in the surf, and forces you to reach out more on the flats.

I've had a 1X for a couple of years. You're absolutely correct - the 2009 model has a recessed seat. I sent Jude an email asking what exactly he changed and what he hoped to gain with the changes. I'll let you know what he says.

Jude said he's been lowering his seat platforms every time he comes out with a new canoe. A couple years ago, people began suggesting he drop it real low and raise thin gunwales along the seat to prevent wash so he followed thru on that. He also said the old V1-X had more rocker than most Hawaiian OC-1s so he reduced the rocker too.

Cool! Thanks for the info. Anyone paddled one of these yet?
