State Race on Sunday

Does anyone know if the course will change? The winds being what they have been will make it tricky getting across Waimanalo and around Maks.

Jim Foti will make the call today or tomorrow. The east side swell is coming down. Options are go from Kailua beach around Mokes, or inside from Lanikai to thru Waimanalo. Safety is the first concern.

Many years ago, when Olympic Champ, Greg Barton won this race in windy weather, many chose to follow him behind the Mokes to Makapuu. It was too windy for me, so I opted to go inside at the turn buoy and head for the "Cabbage Patch" and hug the Lanikai shoreline to Makai Range Pier. But before Makai Range, I felt the current pulling me to Rabbit Island, so I let it sling shot me through the two islands into the middle of the pack (unbelivable). Of course, by the time we hit Alan Davis, the pack had left me in their sea spray.

I am sitting in Lanikai right now looking at the water. No whitecaps inside the bay and hardly any outside the reef. There is a little ground swell breaking on the reef in Lanikai and Waimanalo. The wind is blowing hard, but there is no white bombs anywhere to be seen inside the reef. The conditions are nothing compared to the Oahu Championship 2 weeks ago. In my brother's words, "It's Puppy".

Some people are afraid to paddle in anything but downwind surf. Sure, we all like to surf, but we are still paddlers right? This is not the Surf Championship race, it is the state championship. If you are really good, you should be able to paddle through the first part and get to the surf. I haven't been training too much and I am going to do it. So for those of you intimidated by Waimanalo, take off the panties!

Now, if overnight, the surf starts to pound and it doesn't look reasonable and safe, we'll change the course. But wind guru is calling for the exact same conditions tomorrow as right now.

Course will start INSIDE LANIKAI. Sandbag beach, directly inside the Mokulua Islands, which is the 1300 block of Mokulua Dr. We will NOT go
over the cabbage patch reef in Lanikai. Registration is still at Kailua Beach Park from 6:30 - 8:00 am.

Hope this calms everyone down. Just come to paddle and we'll have had fun when it is all said and done.

Any questions, call Jane McKee.

Aloha,
Jim
