shark feeding business in maunalua bay

in case you didnt know this..there is a man going to start a business taking people to see shark feeding 3 miles outside portlock.just like the business on the north shore.. because he is in federal waters, no permit is needed.ive heard he has been chumming the waters for over a month already. my question is..he says this is educational, so why feed? see what comes by when you put the cage in the water.the boat and cage are moored in hawaii kai already.
there is going to be a meeting on thursday 4/16 at 7:00p at kamiloiki school. please come. we need to show that we ocean users dont want this.or if you are in favor, lets hear why.

AlfredVG brought it up last month in this thread:

http://www.ocpaddler.com/node/5025

Some good and bad points were brought up,but could use more discussion about it.

No permits needed in federal water? WRONG. He needs a permit and i want to know how he got it. he needs one to pick the people up, take their money etc etc etc...
People need to go to the meeting like H20lady mentioned.

We need to all be at that meeting on 4/16 at Kamiloiki School at 7pm. I guarantee you'll see alot of concerned waterpeople there to show their discontent with this very dangerous business.
Oh, and this is just part of what the State has in store for all of us. Be aware of House Bill 980."The Recreational Renaissance". The State is trying to boost their revenue by using our natural resources and charging fees for certain Parks and facilities. That's how they'll repair the broken down facilities around the State. They haven't done this for 20 years. How come, all of a sudden. These things are imoprtant to them now? It never was before, and they would just take the money from one Department to shore up the general fund so the Gov. can use it anyway she sees fit. Why else would we have such broken down schools. She gives the DLNR peanuts to run a department. 1% of the budget... For what? They are understaffed.
There's alot to consider. We can't sell our souls just for the money. Our safety, our culture, our lifestyles, our natural beauty and resources are at stake...

This guy is not planning on operating 3 miles out of Portlock, he is measuring 3 miles from the shore line of Maunalua.

I hope a lot of people get fired up about this.

Education-My ass. Just like they are educating and learning about dolphins at the Hilton on the Big Island. You can learn a lot about dolphins in an area smaller than an Olympic swimming pool. Right? I guess you can learn about how dolphins like swimming pools, being feed by hand and petted by tourist. I am not a dolphin but I can tell you-not much. When I am at the Hilton, I always ask to speak to the marine biologist on duty-the response I always get is "Would you like to make a reservation we can bill it to your room or credit card?"

It is about Pono. You can't mess with a Hawaiian Sea turtle-which I understand-but you can screw with Dolphins, Sharks and Manta Rays all you want in the name of a $$$$.

I hope this gets stopped. KonaJ, I agree w/ your sentiments about messing w/ these creatures. They deserve the same protection that turtles and monk seals get. Aren't dolphins covered by the Marine Mammals Protection Act?

I Guess not. http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/esa/mammals.htm

I hate sharks so this worries me to some degree. However there hasn't been more or less attacks along the northshore and west side where there are other businesses. So I don't think there will be much of a change. I think sharks are around already, we just never see them.

Damm ... This is one time I hate green. Hope you guys can shut it down before humans are hamburgers to noah.

So this will probably get shut down and everyone will celebrate-which is good. But in some ways it mimics the SuperFerry-which I agree didn't follow correct procedure and was a big mess. I wonder if anyone in state government lost their job-probably not.

But I wish the same drive and commitment to "shut it down” be it the Super Ferry or Shark tours took place against development. I would take the Super Ferry over 4,000 condos, shopping malls, and Starbucks. The condos and massive development cause more damage to Hawaii, the environment, way of life, and traffic.
Time and History has shown that politicians, government, will of the people, and fractured environmental groups won’t protect the land.

From traveling around, I have come to believe the only thing that truly stops development, over development, and housing that doesn’t reflect the natural environment is nasty mean lawyers and attorneys. Really Nasty ones that don’t need shark cages-they are not afraid of sharks. Pay them a whole lot (more than developers) and put them to work to protect Hawaii and the Ocean. A massive coalition of ALL of the environmentally conscious groups in Hawaii funding an army of attorneys. Take a look around and see where this strategy has worked-Malibu, Martha’s Vineyard, Parts of San Diego area, etc. Will it stop growth No but it will slow it way down. I would donate to that group.

I am not against housing. I just want it to look a little more natural. So we don’t look at a beautiful mountain landscape and then 10 years from now look up and say “What the F is that? Who allowed that mess of track homes to be built?” Or another beach ruined because of the wonderful shade of buildings rather than palm trees.

This is a TinyUrl for KonaJ's link - I think the underscores got removed by OCP?

Here's an excerpt:

"A town hall meeting is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Kamiloiki Elementary School to address the issue. Area representatives and community groups are expected to attend.

A shark cage on a boat named Snoopy V observed near Kona Brewing Co. at Koko Marina has caught the attention of many residents and Maunalua Bay users. Many say they are shocked and worried that the business would attract sharks closer to ocean-users on Oahu's South Shore.

Business operator Iolani Lewis did not return Star-Bulletin requests for comment, but he told KHON last week that he wants to establish a deep-water tour miles off Maunalua Bay. "While sharks are the main attraction, we want to promote conservation and education," said Lewis.

He said he plans to launch the operation in a couple of months. "I hope to meet with community members to address their concerns about our planned operation. We're not there yet, but we definitely plan to do this," he told KHON."

Mary Pukui writeds in "Place names of Hawaii" that one the old meanings for "Koko" Head was for "the (koko) blood of a man bitten by a shark". Now this guy is going to bring mano in close to the point ( as mentioned he is planning to do his thing 3 miles from the entrance to the marina- not from the end of kawaihoa.). What happens when one of his attractions decides to swing in along the point and take an arm or a leg of someone surfing there? Is he going to get blamed or take any responsibility? The sharks live in their own world- lets not invite them into ours.

H20LADY,

Will not be able to come to the meeting on Thursday, but I am interested to know what comes out of it, and what we can do to pitch in. I would think you could get a lot of signatures on a petition, especially from Hawaii Kai residents and paddlers/surfers/swimmers.
