Molo Solo Live updates

Anybody going to be able to give updates as the race progresses? Question has to asked for us paddles not lucky enough to be racing or in and around the islands. Will be stuck in an office dreaming of one day racing and waiting on the results from this year.

Wind is very light and wrong direction. Going to be a long grueling day.

#3 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 6:41am

A repeat of two years ago. Kudos to the paddlers willing to tough it out.

#4 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 8:13am

One hour in. I'm with Keizo mid pack.

Chingy, jimmy Austin had a great start.

Evslin up with the lead pack.

Field split in twoo at start. Could not see who went north.

#5 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 9:04am

Keizo has officially communicated to us. "the race is f¥$@ing boring"

#6 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 9:28am

#8 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 9:45am

k

cool - thanks for the updates.... my pick is manutea owen, otherwise known as the lewis killer in tahiti - if anyone has bothered to check their versus record

#9 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 9:46am

Last update was danny leading. 2 hours in.

#10 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 10:07am

its Danny's kind of conditions- grueling flat to wind in your face. Whoever reads the currents best may win. I hear people went North and straight toward Koko Head. Good luck to all. It is no fun on a day like this.

#11 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 10:18am

in kauai its gusting to about twenty from the south west, i hope ist not like that in the channel

#12 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 11:18am

Mikaele the winds are in thier face about 10 knots and small chop. definatly challenging conditions. i hear that Kai and Danny are duking it out. Lauren is in the middle of the pack. She is making progress slowed down to about 4 knots. She appears to be in the lead in her division.

#13 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 11:31am

Danny.
Louis.
Kai.
Jimmy Mael in the mix too.

#14 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 11:49am

do you know where maui kjeldsen is?

#15 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 12:05pm

Leaders 4 Miles out. No word on order.

#16 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 12:32pm

Danny and Kai battling 2 mi from koko head.

#17 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 12:42pm

Mikaele Lauren is 5 miles from the finish. Alana came up on her and lauren took it up a notch and now alana is 3:30 min back. have not heard on the mens. Lauren is passing a few canoes as some of the paddlers hit the wall. still about a 10 k head wind.

#18 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 12:47pm

ahh gooo danny goooo

#19 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 12:54pm

jc9_0, could it be that this Louis is actually Lewis ?

#20 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 12:56pm

If danny is ahead at this point, he will muscle it out over kai!!!

#21 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 12:56pm

Any body know where is Tyson Kubo?

If you're going to be thinking, you may as well think big !!!

#22 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 1:07pm

MikaeleGot to give it to Kai he is stroking to the finish 20 boat lengths ahead of Danny with Jimmy following. Lauren is putting on the finishing push putting some distance between her and Alana. Great race day for Maui champs Kai and Lauren. This is the second time that they have both taken this race in challenging conditions. congratualations to all the paddlers that endured the head winds and sacked it to the finish.

#23 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 1:13pm

"If danny is ahead at this point, he will muscle it out over kai!!!"

#35 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 3:44pm

Do you have any idea how tough it is riding in an escort boat on a day like today?? Boat bouncing all over the place, wind spraying water in your face. Kept spilling my gatorade. That was as uphill as uphill get from about and hour and a half in. Brutal. Congrats Kai and Lauren and everyone who finished. For all those who think their fav's are tops in certain conditions, tell em to sign up 6 months ahead before anyone knows the conditions and show up no matter what. Hats off to everyone who even started this race knowing what was ahead of them and going anyway.

#36 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 3:55pm

I hear Mark Frasier from KAuai was 6th overall- that guy has stamina - finished 4th 2 years ago in similiar conditions. And his wife, Alana, came in second in the ladies. Certainly another great paddling couple!

What position was Lewis in when he pulled out at Portlock?

Ugly conditions. Makes the winners and everyone who cmpleted the race, all that more solid. Today was technique, conditioning, persistance, ironwill!

#37 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 4:44pm

good for mark hes been putting in alot of hours. and alana as well

#38 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 4:47pm

Way to represent MAUI and the Kai wa'a Products..I should get the Scorpius.

#39 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 5:18pm

Aloha everyone Did the race today got to say it was brutal. Head wind for 32 miles going at 5 miles hr. it was crazy.
Course mistake went to far north....fought current head wind the ho way..............congrats to everyone........TRodrigues

#40 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 6:06pm

96744stroker, and everyone else who fronted up that was an Inspirational effort no matter what your time or place were observing from down here in Australia, were very proud of our own Mike Mills Thom 12th overall and 2nd in masters.Once again great ballsy effort from all entrants, the Kaiwi chanell is still the benchmark wether there are bumps or not.

#41 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 6:21pm

Watching a good buddy go through that race was terrible. It would have been nice to do more than just give him water, food, and encouragement. To his credit, he stayed on his canoe, never took a break, and finished.

I wouldn't wish 32 miles of paddling into 10 to 15 mph winds on anyone... except maybe goodwaka. Ok no, not even him.

#42 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 6:31pm

todays race by far was the worst and hardest thing ive ever done.. the white caps and bumps were heading to molos and it was pretty much all paddling. props to everyone who finished and mahalos to JC09 for providing the sticker of encouragement. "PAIN IS TEMPORARY, QUITTING IS FOREVER". congrarts Kai, Danny, and Jimbo and to the rest of the gang who stuck it out.

#43 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 6:57pm

"youngbuck", I don't have a son, but I know your Dad is super proud of you. I am also super proud of you and blessed to know both you and the Capt. Sleep well, you've earned it .

#44 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 7:49pm

Youngbuck, hopefully after a few days rest todays race will be closer to the best and the hardest thing you have ever done, Mate thats like money in the bank now, you'll know in future races that you can handle anything,
in the long run this race should mean more to you than if it had been classic downwind conditions.

#45 Sun, 04/19/2009 - 9:51pm

If you made it to Portlock you got rewarded with white caps coming IN to the Maunalua Bay finish which made for rare surfing conditions to the bridge. That gave Kai a slight advantage at that point. So close between those top guys- after such a slugfest- with only 1 minute separation-they all deserve top honors.

#46 Mon, 04/20/2009 - 1:41am

YES GANGE, 1 minute separate the gold from silver and bronze.....after 32 miles of most challenging conditions...
this 3 guys are one solid team.

same same for all the finishers!

#47 Mon, 04/20/2009 - 4:55am

Unreal you guys and gals. Incredible. Yesterday was NOT a day to be crossing the channel. Props to everyone that finished....even props to those that tried to finish. Crazy weather.

Hats off to Kai....way to go brother...
I feel sorry for Danny. Seem to always fall a little short.
Thumbs up to Jimmy Boy...he was my darkhorse pick.
Mael..great year..incredible year. Be proud.
Whale Rider Judd...old man and the sea. Awesome.

and to Manny...to put this whole thing together, then have to endure that grueling race, and on top of that, be competitive, that was awesome. Good job.

Lewis L....come back in a couple weeks and stick it to the South Africans in the surfski. Hawaii will be pulling for you.

JawsOut.

#48 Mon, 04/20/2009 - 3:14pm

Any one have the full results from the race ?

#49 Mon, 04/20/2009 - 5:34pm

Lewis Laughlin was not able to finish the race. I was escorting Lewis and doing my best to help him through a difficult race which he did not have the time to prepare for. Lewis started slowly because he only had a few days to adjust to the OC-1 after training only on the surfski. He was learning the canoe at the same time that he was racing it. By mid channel he had worked his way up from 15th to 3rd place behind Danny Ching and Jimmy Austin. At 3 hours he passed Jimmy and was about 50 meters behind Danny. He could get no closer for the next hour and he began to suffer from shoulder pain and hip pain due to his unfamiliarity with the OC-1. At 4 hours he decided to stop paddling in order to prevent further injury which would hurt his chances in the surfski race next month. He learned a valuable lesson in the race that surfski and canoe are not the same and you have to prepare for each one separately.

Hi Tommy,

Thanks for writing that .. Just wondering ... Was the OC he was using one he never sat on before ? Sounds like he was headed for a fantastic finish.

aloha,
pog

Lewis put in an amazing performance !!! Its` very hard to train full time on a ski and go out and do very well in a canoe race.

If he figured he was injuring himself by continuing to paddle then he definitely made the right decision by stopping and saving it for another day.

#52 Wed, 04/22/2009 - 3:08am

It must have been a difficult decision fro him, because the man doesn't like to not finish something he has started...
