Bartlett & Spalding tops in Maui Season Kick Off - Jan 15
With the Kihei waters looking a bit challenging on Fri. coupled with the forecast for strong SSW winds on Sat. Maui organizers and paddlers got on the cell and internet to plan for adjustments. It was a good call. We started our grand season opener at Sarento's on the Beach in Kihei, South Maui, paddled up, YES, UPWIND for 3 miles to Makena landing before turning around to enjoy the fruits of our labor. It was a challenging first race of the season. Especially for those of us in "top shape".
Again the paddleboarders are our idols as they selected to go for the long course. We had a record 8 entries in the paddleboard division. Thanks to Blair and Kerry for their recruiting.
The 2nd start was the long course field. You know, the experienced cheaters, those who just can't wait for the "real" start. Get the drift? We had a terrible, uneven, unfair start. For sure President Ricky B. will be on us for that at our next race. Kai led for just about the entire race. When Mark & JP came along side him on the down wind run, Kai stepped into overdrive and pulled away. Welcome home to Maui's Olympian, Lauren Spalding. We are so proud of her! Of course she dominated the women's OC-1 division and has many men gunning for her.
I think that Wally Bouchard, racing on his new surfski, has an extra hop in his step this evening as he clearly owned the surfski division today. Good job Wally.
Welcome to the novices, who had a fair start, congratulations. There was some confusion amongst them as 2 of them went all the way to the long course buoy and several of the ladies turned prior to the short course buoy. We are not sure on the "short, short course" people so the standings listed are in the order of their finish. We are sure that the next race will go better for them as they have gained knowledge in the OC-1 experience. There appears to be some tight races in the novice men and women's divisions.
There has been some movement in the ranks of paddlers. This makes for exciting racing. We will be monitoring the up and comers and keeping you all abreast of our friendly competition.
MAHALO to Aaron Placourakis and his staff for a first class event. The band, the food, the drinks, the ambiance -- all 5 star and enjoyed by the paddlers and support crew.
2 weeks -- Leilani's Triangle in Ka`anapali West Maui.
A hui hou, Ricky & Sharon

I am an old friend of Cheryl Melinder, searching everywhere to find what's happened to her. I saw her name on this site and now I'm hopeful. She's from Maui and went to school with me in Greeley, Colorado. If anyone knows her email address, hook me up: destructolo@yahoo.com
