Jacob Abeytia, Margie Kawaiaea, win Pali Race - Feb 12

It turned out to be an okay day for us. Some wind, a few rain drops, whales, reef, not too hot but still a lot of hard work. We started off with 2 water patrol boats experiencing engine trouble. Head official Kalela had to pull his boat out but thankfully he swam out to set the finish buoy. Mary was able to fix her problem and joined us at the start of the short course. Mahalo to Cary and Shauna, our certified lifeguards on jet skis, for running with the long course and being the turn “buoy” at Haycraft.
It is always a beautiful site to see all the canoes, paddleboards and surfskis on the water. Great starts, and a few close finishes. In the Surfski division visiting Californian Tony Muller pushed Geoff Bogar to the finish, just 4 seconds separating them. Jacob Abeytia sure made a statement on his first race back. Riding a new Hurricane he finished 17 seconds in front of teammate Nabil Vogel to finish first overall. Welcome back Jacob. 3rd and 4th place finishers, Felipe & Mael, had their battle from start to finish. They were running side by side almost the entire race, no time to rest or ease-up. Big congratulations to Don Mehling, our MCKC treasurer, for breaking into the OC-1 men elite. He’s been working hard and it is showing. Eric Barto is knocking at the door.
Bill Gearon and Bob Fulkerson were relieved to learn that the winner of their 60+ division, Hank Johnson, is visiting from Oregon and won’t be here for the next race. Nice job Hank.
OC-2’s are a fun event, usually. We had some new combinations on the course today, all did well especially Iris and Lea who completed the course with a broken cable. They sure worked as a team as they did not get blown out to sea, they finished inside the buoy and they managed a few smiles when it was all over.
Love the Novice and short course races. A few of them huli right off the start, creating a little jam-up and causing the adrenaline to pump a bit more. All good on the water, no one out of control, everyone working together. Keona Dang and Cheryl Melinder proving to be the hot Novice B paddlers.
Lunch was ONO, well actually it was Mahimahi that was ono – it tasted goooood with the Caesar salad. Our sponsor, Tammy Williams was a gracious hostess, handing out lunches and cookies. We truly appreciate her kokua.
Just a reminder for our next race – Maliko – we will be honoring our loved ones who are no longer with us so please bring flowers and warm thoughts.
Aloha, Ricky & Sharon
