First Regatta Races

you know its sad when the only sport native to the Hawaiian people and culture isnt even featured on the evening news. is there any one who has connections to the news media? we as paddlers should really do something about this for our sport. Imagine the realms our sport can reach if we can get the local media support! lets do something!!!

I think if we could organize a way for all the islands (or local associations) to submit footage to HCRA from the regatta, we could do a weekly narrative.
Maybe Terry or Alex at Ocean Paddler could help? I think clubs would be willing to chip in to cover the costs etc.
Our mission as clubs and paddlers is to perpetuate canoe paddling, keep up the good energy youngbuck!

EVEN though i dont live in the islands, i'am aware off all the time and work you have to put into making sure races are covered by the media, its none profit, voluntary work, and takes a deep commitment on the ones pushing for it to happend.

Joe has a great idea, its all about the KOKUA to make things happend. and it really comes down to making it easy and at cero cost for the tv shows, magazines and websites.

somebody that haves the passion and the time is very necesary to lead and for sure needs a good team to back him up since there is a lot of e-mails, phonecalls, money, productions, covering, editing, recording copies, sending to the different contacts, folow up to make sure it goes on air, be very greatfull with the ones that open the windows to audience.....lots of work gange. only with KOKUA.

just my 2 cents from the other side of the planet....

I used to promote different sports, and all it really takes is to call the media to find out who is the one to give results to and keep calling in results and such. I think TV is a tougher nut to crack than newspaper and radio, as you either need to get them down to the races (on the weekend!), or you need to provide the content for them. It doesn't happen overnight, but with persistence, you can get more coverage if you really want it. It tends to be a snowball effect. Start with radio call in shows, they love to have different stuff. Email race results to all print media and tv to boot. Create a post in the organization to take care of the media, preferably someone who enjoys phone time. Careful, though. look what happened to surfing! Too much people.

Yeah, think if someone provided the footage, the results, and scripted out the major highlights from that days races, I am sure the TV would squeeze it in.

I believe these guys run on skeleton crews and it costs the TV station bucks to send a crew out. However, if the paddling community could provide the main ingredients, maybe the TV stations will be more inclined to put it all together to cook up a good story.

Over the past couple of years our club used to provide video to KITV ch. 4 every Sunday afternoon and they would use it in the 10 pm sports. I am sure they would still do that if someone wanted to provide them the video.

Enjoy the ride!

i was thinking about it and i forgot to mention a very important detail in all this equation:

"to not step in any other toes"

first thing to do is,once you are sure you are commited to help, before presenting any plan or wonderfull ideas., , talk to the person in charge in comunications of your club , and of course to the asosiation wich is afiliated. i think helping the persons allready on that "deparment" is most certenly to make friends and not hard feelings....

what do you think?

I worked at Ch 2 for a long time and used to cover regattas....usually because I would ask to go. If you want coverage here's what you need to do. Either hire someone or get someone to volunteer to shoot the race. The person that shoots the race needs to know what they are doing. You can't zoom in and out and pan wildly. getting someone who has experience shooting would help with getting stuff aired. It needs to be done professionally. You need a decent camera and it needs to be shot from a tripod. Call the stations beforehand and let them know what you're doing and that you will be providing them with video and results. Don't show up with 2 hours of video for them to sort through because they are only going to air 30 seconds at the most. Shoot about 5 minutes worth of video. Then make sure you follow through with the results as soon as you know what they are. TV stations love to get free stuff to air...especially on weekends but you need to talk to them beforehand to get it set up and then follow through.
