Record Miler

I was just looking through the finishing time of the open men's race:
http://ohcra.com/MZmainpages/Results.html

Does anyone know the OHCRA regatta record time for the 1-mile course at Ke'ehi?

Outrigger's Freshmen crew had a blazing time of 6:59 - fastest mile time of the day.
Their Senior race was pretty face as well at 11:05

Congrats to the guys for setting the mark for the season.

very kewl - mahalo!

#2 Tue, 06/09/2009 - 2:02pm

A couple years ago, maybe 06 Healani crew with Kea and Tapa went
6 46 at keahi but that wasn't the record but it was close if my memory serves right.

#3 Wed, 06/10/2009 - 6:03am

Was Jim Farnum on that crew?

#4 Wed, 06/10/2009 - 7:05pm

According to the all knowledgable Kekama, it's 6:42 by lanikai. Not sure when, or if its actually true, got no proof...Probably was a windless flat day. That time is fast as ยข@*#.

^^^ Kalama Heine.....one of the most under appreciated, under rated steersmen in regatta racing. That guy can do a 1/2 mile paddling the whole way and poke maybe twice....then nail the turn. And then do it all over on the way back. Awesome game changing steersman.
And how's Tapa....looking pretty thick there.

#7 Thu, 06/11/2009 - 3:17pm

yeah i remember a few years back in about 01 hui lanakila's novice A's were doing like 7;04 at keehi. and yeah heine is under rated

#8 Sat, 06/13/2009 - 10:26pm

Breaking 7mins in general is in my opinion considered FAST. WOW i miss paddling!! I am curious to see what time 6 Olympic Canoe paddlers could do a mile in.....I have heard that it would be or has been done in around 6 ?????possible????

#9 Sat, 06/13/2009 - 10:49pm

I doubt they could do it much faster, especially if one of them had to steer. Every time Olympic paddlers do the channel, they underachieve. I'd rather see the top Tahitians focus on the Olympics. These guys are the best in the world (duh).

#10 Sun, 06/14/2009 - 4:32am

Kalama Heine is also a great coach. Kamehameha School Kapalama is fast every year.

Jimothy, you guys got to be standing on a hill in that picture, no way Kea and Tapa are as tall as you...

#11 Sun, 06/14/2009 - 6:48pm

yes we are on a slight grade there cause I am Tall. And the Channel is a totally different beast than a one mile sprint.6-7 minutes vs 4-6hrs Does anyone know how fast Tahitians do the mile??? I have seen them at World Sprints at 500 and 1000 meters and they are F ing Fast. If I had any money I would put it on Olympics canoe guys to go under 6;30? yes? no? maybe so.... and besides Kalama being an awsome steersman, Kea, Tapa Beyers, are studs and Che was a Novice A at the time. Fun times, WOW I miss paddling, I need to move back to Hawaii, Any one got a job for me?

#12 Sun, 06/14/2009 - 8:06pm

The Hungarians were claiming to do 6:30s or so when they dabbled in Outrigger in the mid 90s, but that was unofficial,of course. I think w/ a turn, in flat water, tops would be somewhere in the high 6:30s/low 6:40s. IMO, the time posted by Jimothy's crew is near the theoretical max. speed for that type of boat on that course. Maybe OHCRA should start doing 1000 meters etc. so the times could be compared internationally. Maybe look at the world sprint times and convert to mile to get an idea of what the Tahitians might do.

#13 Mon, 06/15/2009 - 5:27am

It was also very windy that day, Tailwind down, Headwind back. But Combination of Tapa Stroking a hell of a race and Kalama Steering was just nasty/sick/bad ass (all in a good way)

#14 Mon, 06/15/2009 - 6:46am

Yes, as we know the conditions can get pretty choppy out there in the afternoon, especially on the outside lanes, which makes the time that much more impressive.

#15 Mon, 06/15/2009 - 6:58am

The HCRA website is great for comparing times across the state.

The fastest times across the state this year so far

The Hui Lanakila Novice A's that were pulling the 7:04's were being steered be Adam Trienen-Aea....another steersman that can paddle hard the entire race and poke maybe twice. Another underrated steersman.

#17 Tue, 06/16/2009 - 11:10am

Poiboy20 - that was an interesting link - great cross comparison of times across the various race organizations.

Does the other organizations also use koa canoes in their races (MOKU, MCHCA)

What are the general speed differences between Koa and fiberglass?

I noticed there was no Hui Wa'a representation in the open division until you get to the Women's senior race and Waikiki Beach Boys women's crew is 15 seconds faster than the next crew.

15 seconds seems like a huge time difference.

Another interesting note - sophomore race, the fastest time is a unimaginable 5:16.19 by Kahana Canoe Club. That would mean they made the half mile marker in about 2:38!

#18 Tue, 06/16/2009 - 11:56am

This weekend, Kai Opua Freshmen won in 6:59 in Kona. Keauhou was just a half second behind them.

#19 Tue, 06/16/2009 - 12:00pm

Just noticed the Outrigger Women's Senior crew looks really impressive as well with all of their veteran paddlers. Awesome job!

#20 Tue, 06/16/2009 - 12:02pm

Moku o Hawaii uses Koa only.

5:16? No way. Downwind, waves, no turns?

#21 Tue, 06/16/2009 - 12:03pm

Looks like the 5:16 is a typo. Check out the results from the regatta:

http://hcrapaddler.com/members/hcra_results.php?view=byevent&rid=181

Kahana got second in in the sophomore men with a time of 5:16

#22 Tue, 06/16/2009 - 9:53pm

Che Sabol, Unlce Jocker's son. i used to race with him in Manu betwen 97 and 98.....great ohana. good memories.

#23 Wed, 06/17/2009 - 4:47am

8:16 seems much more realistic than 5:16 - thanks for finding the reason for that glitch in the stats.

#24 Wed, 06/17/2009 - 8:59am

You right Kamama...gotta be 8:16. Besides, I believe on Maui they run a quarter mile course. So, that would be 3 turns. In the states with 3 turns just breaking 8:00 minutes is big time.

#27 Mon, 06/14/2010 - 10:50am

Looking at this thread again, I notice Kalama H. had a good Open 4 time at keehi.

#28 Sat, 06/12/2010 - 8:34am

Hui Lanakila had a 6:40 but the officials changed it to a 6:47 after the race. It was back in 2006, freshmen men.

#29 Sat, 06/12/2010 - 8:22pm

k

500 meters = 0.31miles
500m Open Mens average time for fast crew is 1m.48 (but theres countries with National Records in 1.43 in flat lake water days)

You couldn't really multiply that 500m time by 3 (roughly) to get 1 mile at 5min 30sec plus (!).

If HCRA would allow invitational teams to compete on a fun only basis that would be interesting.
