17th "Guns and Hoses" Law Enforcement & Fire Regatta - Kona

[Photos] by Marjie Santos

The day started out with a 5 mile lond distance race which were in three heats. The winners came out to be Team Halawa crew from Oahu, "Team Glen" from Honolulu Police Department, for the men and women's distance races respectively. Second in both were won by West Hawaii Fire Department. Team Glen then continued on to the quarter mile sprint races by continuing their winning sweeps in both men and womens divisions.

Team Halawa (Prison) they also had some other top crews their as well, had a strong showing in entering into I believe was 15 out of 18 races and the distance men and women's race. This race was hosted by Hawaii County Police Department Kona side (where i work) and /West Hawaii Fire. Our police department raced in loving memory of Keala Young, a detective that passed on last year. All proceeds and entry fees were to benefit the West Hawaii Special Olympics who also helped out alot in hosting the event which was followed by an awesome awards ceremony with ono local food, great entertainment and of course, the paddling slide show... We also had representation from our local Police Officers and their Ohana, West Hawaii Firemen, Maui's Department of Land and Natural Resources, Prosecutors from Oahu, Honolulu Police, Halawa and others that I may have missed.

I believe Team Halawa won 1st place in the 5 mile long distance race in the Mens Division. Please correct your 1st paragrah. This team put alot of hard work and time to make a good showing and represent Halawa in a big way. I think they deserve the recognition from everyone involved.

Aloha,
From the Booster Club

Aloha All, sorry for offending anyone, it was a mistake, my bad, unfortunately I did not have the race results at the time I wrote the comments, which my concern was actually only placing the photos that I took all day as well as raced and I know all of YOu enjoyed looking at yourselves. Yes, the winner's of the long distance was HALAWA's awesome and very tough looking men! It was only brought to my attention by Waltz today at work... I am not a newswriter so sorry for the mistake, please accept my apology. Halawa was incredibly impressive with all their entries and organization of their crews, hope to see all of you continue on into regular season of 6 man paddling!
Aloha, Marjie
