Great River Race in London, UK - September 6th 2003

Interested in an oc6 outrigger race in the UK?

We got one for you - the Great River Race 2003 - SEPTEMBER 6th 2003.

This one is 22 miles long, through all the historic parts of london, past the London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Tower of London, under London Bridge, Tower Bridge, finishing up at Greenwich.

Its an outrigger race with a twist - oc6 but you have to carry a passenger.

Its run on the high and outgoing tide so its fast - current record in an outrigger is 2 hours 8 minutes.

Aside from oc6's racing it also includes over 250 other craft - whalers, cornish gigs, dragonboats etc.

And finally its run as a handicap - so outriggers will start pretty much at the back - last year we started 204th and finished 3rd - a great rush passing so many crew. There is also a trophy for the fastest boat on the day and the fastest paddle powered crew - typically dragonboats are not far behind the outriggers.

We would love outrigger paddlers or dragonboaters to come and take us on!

If you are a dragonboat team - we can get you a boat - send me an email if interested.

If you are an outrigger team - we need a boat for you - so ... we propose that you get one sent over for the race! In return for you and your boat we will pay your entry fees, and put your team up for a week in London, plus ensure you have enough beer to keep you running. it doesn't have to be a new boat - just get it sent over and we will do the rest. Will also top this up with cash.

Or if you know of any boat builders who want a piece of the UK outrigger community - so far Moana Nui has the largest chunk and there will be demand for lots more boats - so if you can get a team to sponsor you a boat we will still put you up and look after you. Any crew that comes over we would also set up some other paddling around the great river race if you wanna stay for longer.

Check out last years race at or our own race report and pictures at:

I can promise you a race to remember.

Wow! Sounds fun to me. I'd never tried this before but I think it's a good challenge on my part. I'll be needing extra money for my travel and cash for gold is just on time.
