Any comments on how low the ama is in the front? Does it bother anyone?

I can't understand how some people say that there is no info to be had on OCP. Here are very succinct, totally to the point, answers to the question asked.

99% of people on first glance look at it and think it's too different to work. (myself included)
After they paddle it in all conditions, 99% of people decide it works great (myself included)

it only works if you want to be fast or do some great surfing... otherwise, just strap a banana to a couple poles and use those.

And besides, Keizo designed ti! How could it not work?

whoa easy! My new canoe will be ready in about 8 weeks so im just trying to get some insight - not trying to crack on the design.
thx jc9
debmaui - do you not like it? care to share why or why not?

when you pick up your boat, make sure you ask someone at the shop to tell you how it should be rigged. the first few times i went out on my boat i had it rigged with the nose too high and the release off the back of the ama wasn't right. i could actually hear the water sucking off the back of the ama in flat water. once luke showed me how to set it up, it made a big difference in feel. my boat had much better glide and tracked a lot straighter.

second the ask the person on how it should be rigged and definately play around with the settings. My guess is the settings will probably be different for different weight/heights. Its kindda cool to see which part of the ama sits in the water with different settings.
I have no problems with the ama in the flats and the surf but i let other people use the boat with my setting and they had trouble with releasing it off the water when on a wave.

jc9 - I would think you would drop the iako all the way down into the front of the ama?

jpi,
The boys in the shop know best... But,in case you care, what works for me is the front iako in the top hole (higher out of the ama)... Keeps the ama closer to level in the water (more nose down)... With the front hole set, you can adjust the "lean" of the canoe with the rear iako setting. Put a level across the foot well and adjust the rear iako so the boat sits level when you are on it. Mark the iako so you know where "level" is. You can then lean it more to the left by pushing it farther into the ama, or lean it more right by pulling it farther out. I usually paddle mine right at level... If I lean too far left my ass cheek hurts, too far right and it's too light for my skills... Experiment with it and see what setting you like best. I also lowered my seat a bit...
Have fun with it!
Aloha,
Eric

the opposite logic applies here. i use the top hole too after talking to luke. i always thought the lower hole to lift the nose of the ama.... not so though. the kamanu guys told me to rig in calm water and set it up so the water line on the bow end of the ama is roughly even with your foot pedals. then rig the back to where you're comfortable. so i end up using the top hole.

Right on, thanks for the info guys.

There are only 2 hole/2 settings for the front of the ama. If you should rig the ama for the waterline at the foot pedals, everybody would rig the front the same. Your not talking bending iakos now are you? There should be a STANDARD way to rig the canoe that can be shared with everybody. Then fiddle with it to your own personal preference. What is the Shops advice on rigging?
