Abandoned Steersman

Just looking at the results from this weekend's Iron Champs in San Diego and saw that one crew (O'side) was DQ'ed for finishing with only 5 paddlers when they abandoned their steersman after a huli. I want to hear that story. Anyone have any info?

I heard they got fed up with his slalom steering and when they hulied they told him to swim, cause they could go faster without him!!!!!!

I am glad my crew didn't dump me out to sea when we hullied in this race....I would love to hear this story.

Apparently, not as dramatic as I/we had hoped for. Incident was right around the finish line. I had envisioned him being dumped at least a couple of miles offshore. Still haven't gotten the total details.

Another tidbit I heard from a club member. Before the race the steersman was telling that he had never hulied in a race before. What does that tell you???

That he had never steered a race?

I missed when this happened but heard it retold whisper-down-the-lane style in the beer garden. To add insult to injury, didn't another canoe ram them while upside-down and get tangled-up preventing them from righting themselves?

They said it was right in front of the finish line.

From what I could see... and yes it was near the finish line.. the O'side boat was about to be passed by another boat.

The line that the passing boat had was going to take them to the very left finish buoy and the O'side boat for whatever reason be it an attempt to cut off the passing boat or a moment of directional lapse and wandering made a hard left and came directly in front of the other canoe.

The other canoe valiently tried to avoid a collision but in fact their speed was too great and ended up clipping the last 6 inches of the O'side boat. The speed combined with the angle ended up huli'ng (sp?) their boat.

Those two boats amas became tangled but the other boat back paddled and continued on their line to the finish. Nothing was keeping O'side from putting the ama back on the left side spare maybe 15 seconds the two boats were tangled.

Unfortunate.. but thats racing.. and seat six is a prime place to see things like this unfold directly in front of you.

I would have rather passed unabaded on the left as planned
