bump...

Awesome, can't wait to participate. Wondering if HVA has any plans to hold more V-1 clinics ?

What time does da races start?

Website seems to be in construction?

#2 Thu, 07/16/2009 - 5:45pm

Our apologies for the lack of information. If you are on facebook you can find Hawai'i Va'a Association on there too.

Right now there are a couple reasons there isn't anything online.

1) We are still working on the web site. Once it is up you will be able to register and pay race fees online.

2) The schedule depends on how many entrants there are and how many V-1 canoes we have available to loan out. If there are more people than canoes we will have to run short heat races to qualify paddlers for the final.

As soon as registration is up we will be in touch. Then it will be crucial that everyone register ahead of time so we know how many canoes are needed and how many heats have to be run.

So until then, practice your rudderless technique!

The entry form for The Race Around the Hat is now online at www.hawaiivaa.org just click on the Registration link at the top of the page.

Please register online as soon as you can. This will help us determine how many canoes, heats, and jerseys are needed on race day. Adult race fees will be collected on the day of the event. If you are 18 and under you still have to specify on the form whether or not you will be needing a boat. Youths race for free.

Registration will remain open online until September 3rd.

Also posted on event calendar.

Race day schedule update.

A short clinic has been added on the morning of the race. This will provide a brief overview of how to paddle and/or steer a V-1 canoe. Novice paddlers are encouraged to come early and get some boat time before racing. Everyone is welcome to attend but this will be specifically geared towards getting new adults and children up to speed. Novice adults will have the choice of paddling either the course around Chinaman's Hat or within Kane'ohe Bay.

Please remember, registration must be done online at www.hawaiivaa.org while race fees and waivers are to be taken care of on race day.

Schedule for September 12th:

Check in, race dues and waivers 7-9
Clinic 8-9
Open Men heat 1 10:00
Open Men heat 2 11:00 (or earlier)
Novice and 15 and under 12:00
Open Women/18 and under 1:00
Open Men final 2:00
Awards 3:00

*Please note there may be starting time changes on race day, but the order of events will remain the same.

This might be getting annoying, but I just wanted to bump this to the top to remind everyone that the race is coming up. Pre registration will be closing on September 1st.

Response has been great so far with registration! A big thanks to everyone who has gone online and completed the form. Also, we will now be allowing a limited number of beach entries on race day. Race fees will increase by $10 for late registrations. So just make your life easier and cheaper and get online...

Please come out and support the race, our sponsors have really stepped up and we will be having some awesome prize give aways. Really, we're not just saying that! Many of our sponsors will be on hand with product displays and representatives to talk paddling with anyone interested.

so awesome! Not annoying at all - should be exciting!

#8 Mon, 08/31/2009 - 8:17am

That's the breaks ShurlOck, I'm in the same canoe as you, but will try to get there after kids volleyball and soccer, if can? For this should be lots of fun race at a great beach location where everybody can watch from the shore.

#9 Mon, 08/31/2009 - 9:39am

Just an update on a couple of developments for the upcoming event.

Race day schedule is going to be tweaked a bit. We have enough entries that a third men's heat has been added. This should not make the day any longer since the heat races will only be one lap of the race course.

Registration 7-9
Clinic 8-9
Open Men heat 1 10:00
Open Men heat 2
Open Men heat 3
Novice and 15 and under 12:00
Open Women/18 and under 1:00
Open Men final 2:00
Awards 3:00

Secondly, your heat times count. Your overall time for the day will be the total of BOTH your heat time and finals time. (if you qualify) Both races mean something!

Lastly, the heat course and final course will take different routes. One will go around Chinaman's Hat clockwise while the other will go counterclockwise. We are working on a better course map now and will have it posted by Monday.

Thanks Kapono for the bump.

Just want to add that turnout is looking great. As of last count there 61 people registered. We are actually printing more jerseys tomorrow to keep up with demand. And we still anticipate several beach entries... we're stoked.

It looks like conditions for the race will be great for learning to paddle a va'a. Variable winds 5 - 10 mph are predicted with sunny weather through the weekend. Wind forecast from Surf News Network and local news looks like this:

See everyone there!

#13 Wed, 09/09/2009 - 11:54pm

is the distance for the men's final race infinite? There's no finish route. Sweet!

#14 Thu, 09/10/2009 - 5:40pm

That might take a while...

I got a chance to run through the race course for the HVA race 9/12/09 today. Easy water. Some shallow spots and a nice and tame ‘down wind’ section. Check out the course (not in any particular direction)

Available at the Blog Site: http://www.maoliwaa.com/Maoli_Waa/Blog/Blog.html

#15 Thu, 09/10/2009 - 10:22pm

ATTENTION!!! Due to permitting issues the course has changed!

We will still be racing out of Kualoa Beach Park. Racing will take place at the main beach park. Start and Finish are to the north of the breakwater protecting the point closest to Chinaman's Hat. Still a fun run and you will still get to paddle "around the hat".

Everything else stays the same. Schedule, divisions, etc. All races are one lap with men's final of two laps. Novice division will run a triangle course in between the beach and Chinaman's Hat. Winds are forecasted to be variable so the water should be beautiful for Children and Adults. See the new map which I have attached. Just wanted to get something out there to keep all paddlers informed.

By the way, registered paddler count is up to 68!

Sorry for the typos, but you guys get the idea....

Mahalo plenty HVA for organizing and putting on a traditional outrigger canoe race. It was such a wonder sight observing all the rudderless canoes at sacred Kualoa. The weather was perfect and the course ideal for testing paddling skills. The course was also perfect for spectators, who could watch the entire race from the beach. Hopefully, there will be more such races in the future?

#17 Sat, 09/12/2009 - 11:10pm

I'm really looking for the next HVA race as a I missed this one for school. I hope for a clinic also again. Mahalo

#18 Sun, 09/13/2009 - 6:54pm

Ditto. Kudos to HVA, Kamanu and all the other sponsors for putting up such an awesome event. Looking forward to more events and longer distance events...

#19 Sun, 09/13/2009 - 10:37pm

so what's the story with goto and the results?

#20 Mon, 09/14/2009 - 7:50am

Overall, I was impressed with the traditional paddling skills of all the paddlers. Of course, many of the novices dragged their legs to help steer, but none of the open paddlers did as they maneuvered their canoes inches away from the breakwater pilings. With such confidence, perhaps the next beach for a race would be Kailua/Lanikai? Out thruough the "Mokes" and surfing "Wraps," should pose a new challenge for the rudderless paddlers? At least, won't have to worry about the "Cabbage Patch" snapping rudders.

#21 Mon, 09/14/2009 - 9:38am

Some really nice lines on those rudderless outriggers. Paddled the Aukahi, and although paddled 3hrs prior, with an additional 3 hour surf session, I would've paddled all day if allowed...it was a relaxing and addictive experience to paddle Kamanu's new creation. Great job guys.

#22 Mon, 09/14/2009 - 10:52am

While many people have talked about Kamanu, I just want to mention NS Air had a presence at this race and played a huge part in the Race Around the Hat. Also, Tiger Canoe not only gave a cash donation to make sure the race took place, but loaned his new boats to the race for anyone to use. A big mahalo to Tiger for his enthusiasm. Kapono Ciotti with Maoli Wa'a was very helpful in all phases of race preparation and donated tons of raffle prizes. Obviously, Luke and Keizo play a part in the HVA. With that said, we go to great lengths to make sure that all rudderless boat builders and paddle makers are included in our activities. The HVA strives to grow the sport of paddling, not one business or another.

OK enough of the serious talk. Race and clinic schedule for the 2010 spring/summer season should be coming out in the next week or two. So keep your eyes and ears peeled!

#23 Mon, 09/14/2009 - 10:58pm

The race was awesome, best way to spend the day. My leg is tired from being dragged around every 90 degree turn.

#24 Tue, 09/15/2009 - 1:26am

Nice Job HVA,
Jeremy, you did a lot of great organizing. It was nice to see so many people out and everyone I talked to had a lot of fun.
Organizing a race is tons of work and this one was flawless.
Mahalo Nui!
