Grip or slip?

OK paddlers, I've failed Search 101 and cannot find a relevant discussion. I'd like to read opinion and fact on whether you prefer your hold on the paddle to be grippy like sticky rubber on hot tar or slippery as after applying sunscreen or Sportglide. (of course, it's not good to let your canoe slip out of your hands and onto the ground!)

A friend says grip, as he says having a slippery hold compels him to actively grab the shaft and paddle grip wasting energy that could go to propelling the canoe. I go with slip, as I have far fewer blisters and calluses and actually think I use less energy--the upper hand lightly holds the grip and I curl the fingers of the lower hand just enough to keep the paddle from flying out. the dynamic force of the stroke keeps the paddle in my hand.

SLIP or GRIP?

Thanks

There's a bunch of threads on this, the search engine must not be working. The style you describe is exactly what should be happening, IMO. If you need wax, something is wrong.

In fresh water, nothing on the shaft. Salt water feels a bit more slick and I'll usually use a very light swipe of wax, no need to make it like an old beater surfboard.

All you need is carbon shaft and #2000 sandpaper.

I only use wax when I get that sunscreen all over my hands. Otherwise I have weened myself off of wax. Only on the seat and my feet.
