OC1 repair

I recently ran into some reef with my fresh new pueo.....

the hull wasnt hit but the rudder was and it bent and stabbed a huge hole into the bottom of my hull.

Im in Japan and the repair guys are telling me its gonna cost $400 dollars to repair.

A little bit too pricey for me. It's right behind the spot for the rudder. The hole is a little bigger than my thumb.

Any tips on trying to do this myself?

Mate its brand new, how much did you pay for it? $400 for a professional repair, maybe in Japan that is a fair price? If you know nothing about fiberglass repair pay the money!

For $400 i would want to be also assured that the rudder port tube was not damaged as well. That is a major repair, requiring a thorough inspection, not just a small rudder tip puncture.

I would check the rudder thoroughly as well, especially for cracks around where the shaft enters the body of the rudder. Not good long term if water to enters in this area.

Unless you are experienced at this type of repair, best to pay to have it done.

Like what the others have pointed out, if you don't have the experience to repair it yourself, pay the price for professionals to do it.

Looking at the photo, it doesn't look like it's an easy task to fix. Since it "punched" through the hull, the area could be much more compromised requiring a much bigger "patch job" than you think.

As for preventing this type of damage, shaving the back top part of the rudder at an angle away from the hull may be something you and others need to consider doing.

I know it has been mentioned before in other threads (I know I saw it in Rambo's site for his "Repairing the Hurricane" http://rambos-locker.blogspot.com/2007/04/repairing-hurricane.html) and even the Black with Gold lettering Pueo pictured on Kamanu Composites website has a rudder that has the back top part shaved.

Hey guys thanks for the feedback. About shaving the rudder, are there any negative impacts on the speed of the canoe?

Did you guys do it yourself or did you ask them to do it down at Kamanu?

i'm not 100% sure, but i think the rudder is just turned to one side. this makes it appear like there is a gap.

I guess I was wrong about the Pueo's rudder being shaved, but that's just what it would look like if it was.

I shaved the back top of my rudders with a Dremel with the 407 sanding tip and took under 5 minutes to do each one. I measured about 1/2" down from the back and shaved it at an angle towards the back of the rudder shaft.

Haven't noticed any negative impacts in regards to speed or it affecting steering. Plus it gives me peace of mind that a minor to medium hit of the rudder on a rock or reef head won't end up punching a hole in my hull.

All my rudders are shaved, I put a hole in the hull of my first carbon canoe similar to the damage on your canoe the first time I got it home. I was crushed.
