Maui Maliko Hana Hou Race Results – April 16
As you can see from the results, we had an awesome run on Sat. The waves were not as big as during our first Maliko, instead they were easier to catch and ride and connect, they were cleaner. Those must have been some of the longest rides we’ve been on – what a blast. Mahalo to our Maui paddlers and those visiting for a fair start. To line-up outside in the deep blue and to be fairly in line is a great accomplishment.
We never even saw returning surfski champion Paul Wilford or Hawaii’s own Kai Bartlett or Maui’s own Felipe Gomes. From the get-go they were flying, we finally caught-up with them when we were putting away our canoe. What great paddlers. In our little pack of contenders it was tit-for-tat. Each of us trying to stay on the ride and making sure to catch the next one. At about the 50 minute point Kawika Williams, Rory Frampton and we were all on the same wave, about a canoe length apart, it reminded us of the surfers catching the same wave in Waikiki. That was fun.
This time Dane Ward was able to complete the course and she remains the surf Queen of Maliko. Andrea Moller, one of Maui’s latest “Jaws” tow-in surfers, is improving with each race and finished 2nd on the Vantage. Maui’s top woman paddler for 2005, Margie Kawaiaea, captured the 3rd spot in the elite women’s division.
We have a couple divisions with paddlers of a different sort. The paddleboarders and stand-up boarders. We welcomed Champion paddleboarder Jane Cairns from Northern California. It was great to have such an accomplished paddleboarder in our waters. Thanks to Blair and Kerry Barker for the kokua and sponsorship. There were 4 stand-up paddlers. You know that 9 miles is a long way to go on a stand-up board. We just need to get our course straightened out for them so that they can all accomplish their goals and we can run a fair course for all.
Our race sponsor, Roger Crouse of Maui Rents, provided an ono spread of food and drinks and we also thank him for the candy leis. It was a very relaxing and enjoying lunch.
