Kai Bartlett takes Starbucks Maui Challenge - Apr 23
Maui Canoe & Kayak Club 2005 Hurricane Ocean Racing Series
STARBUCKS MAUI CHALLENGE – April23, 2005
Flemings, Maui to Kaunakakai, Molokai - 26 miles
The shores of Flemings Beach were festive and alive with all our beautiful toys, competitors and supporters. The hum of pre-race activity filled the air while paddlers enjoyed Starbucks coffee and pastries, assembled their rigs, registered for the race and waited anxiously for the “late” arrival of equipment. It is always nice to see paddling friends from other shores and to catch-up on the latest scoops. We thank those returning paddlers from Hawaii, Canada, New Zealand, California, Australia and Oahu who have returned year after year in support of this race. We also welcome all first times to our little Maui `ohana and we hope it was a good experience for you all.
Race Highlights:
Rides, rides, rides, surf, surf, surf… gee to many it seemed as if we hardly paddled at all. During one piece I actually thought, this is what Kai and Mike & Manny folks must feel like all the time, it was so effortless and it was like being on one l…o…n….g… ride. No matter what one’s level of surfing ability, yesterday, you caught a few waves, guaranteed.
Always funny to hear the stories from the relay teams. From the OC-1 co-ed relay teams it was common to hear that the male partners were short changing their female teammates on paddling time. Once the race started the agreed on 30/20 minute split changed to, O.K. that’s enough, hurry up, get off, time to change 30/10 or 30/15 minutes. You all know how it is; we start racing and that other inner “you” shows up. Congratulations to Mael Carey & Andrea Moller for their victory in this division. I must say that it was hard for anyone to sit on the escort boat and watch. Those who went solo yesterday had the right idea, lots of FUN.
You can read the results and see our top finishers, they are all so awesome with the top 8 finishing under 3 hours. What’s within those results, well: We can tell that the Moloka`i paddlers have been training as their standings have greatly improved, nice job!
The OC-1 women’s relay race was a tough match-up with Margie & Dane finishing 8 _ minutes in front of OC-6 teammates Noe & Cherisse. Margie and many other Maui paddlers sure missed Marko today and we all thought about him as we raced with him in our hearts.
Knapper enjoyed his crossing and shared his stories of all the sea life he was able to see, too bad he wasn’t dragging a line, I think he would have caught dinner.
18 year old Carter Barto paddling with his mom Tamara on the OC-2 co-ed unknowingly made her day when he exclaimed to her after a nice series on the water “mom, you rock”. Father and husband Eric Barto, coming off a great season won the Solo 40+ division.
JP Mihlbauer expressed that wining the OC-2 men Relay division was great. Even though they were not 1st to the beach he noted that they finished 5th behind Surfski and canoe world champions. How much more could you ask for? What an awesome field.
There were 13 OC-1 men teams. With Big Island paddlers Harrison Heen & Jake Chong taking the master’s division and Moloka`i firefighter Ekolu Kalama & Maui’s OC-1 season winner, Felipe Gomes taking the open division.
The paddleboarders had their own challenges and they all safely made it to Kaunakakai although it took a bit longer than anticipated. I believe for 2006 we will be making this division a relay team instead of solo.
Only one competitor was not able to complete the course as he dislocated his shoulder only minutes into the race. Arthur Cholakis from New York did enjoy the boat ride and hospitality of the crew and we are glad you are O.K.
In closing: It is always the best feeling to be out there paddling with my husband, Ricky on our OC-2. I’m so thankful to have a great partner. We were able to race with Reggie, Ricky’s brother, and our good friend, Jocelyn Hrkach (who made all the awards) and to have Samantha on board to kokua. To us, it is all about family and friends and having a good time.
Maui Canoe & Kayak Club, run by paddlers for paddlers, aims to spread the aloha through paddling and friendly competition, to make it as affordable as possible and yet have the best and most we can for all the paddlers. We are in this together and we thank our members for the support. Starbucks played a big factor in this race with their donations and we thank them for all their efforts and their aloha. A big Mahalo also to the Big Island group, who showed up in force, almost 30 paddlers, you folks are so organized and on it. MAHALO.
A hui hou, Sharon & Ricky

How come the headline reads Kai Bartlett takes Starbucks Maui Challenge when the first place surfski was over 4 minutes ahead?

cause the site is OCpaddler--- as in outrigger canoe. The guy killed it and deserves recognition, but the headline should go to kai on a website catering to outrigger canoers.

Fair enough. Trouble for surfski paddlers is that other paddling sites that aren't dedicated to OC Paddlers do the same including the newspaper. Thanks for your reply

Just wanted to say that MCKC(Balidoy's) did a wonderful job organizing this race. The jetskis helping to take people & gear to the escort boats before the race was awesome, the conditions were good, fun surf, retty good logistics for off-island participants, ono food & great company. Definitely will spread the word about this one being one of the best races(Maybe even better than the Moloka'i?)
Aloha!

I also think it has to do with "Outrigger canoes" being closer to Hawaiian tradition than a surfski. I'm sure if you go to the Mainland or some where else in the world, Surfski would probably be the headline story. Otherwise...."IMUA...with the OC"!
Aloha!
