Results of Auntie Mary Jane Heihei long distance canoe race held at Keauhou Bay. This event is an all mixed (coed) crew format with 3 men and 3 women racing in each canoe. Named for one of the founders of Keauhou Canoe Club, Auntie Mary Jane Kahanamoku, this event is held on an open date during the regatta season in early June. No regattas are scheduled this weekend due to Hawaii Island High School Graduations.
The short course ran first for 6 miles from Keauhou Bay to Lyman's Bay and return, and included Novice B, Senior Masters 50+, Golden Masters 55+ and Grand Masters 60+ divisions. The first team to cross the line paddled in a canoe made of poplar and koa, so raced in the Open Division on the short course. They were closely followed by the more mature team of age 60+ paddlers from Keauhou.
Following the finish of the short course, the Open Koa, Open Fiberglass, Masters 40+ and the Laua'e, (the Poplar and Koa) Open canoe raced for 8 miles from Keauhou Bay to Casa de Emdeko and return. This event was won by a blended team from Kai Opua and Kai E Hitu in the Open Glass division, with the winning Koa canoe from Keoua Canoe club crossing the line in third place overall.
The Awards luncheon, catered by the Vista Restaurant, and including "Liquid Aloha" from Kona Brewing Company, was followed by the presentation of awards to the top three finishers in each division. Every paddler also received a beautiful shirt sponsored by Keauhou Resort.
A beautiful morning and super conditions with a slight chop, greeted the paddlers, and a great time was had by all the West Hawaii Clubs who attended, with several paddlers from East Hawaii participating with several of the teams. Unlike regattas, where every paddler must race with the club with whom they are registered, one of the great features of this event is that members from several clubs are able to blend to form teams, and husbands and wives who paddle for competing clubs during the regatta season are thence able to paddle in the same crew. long distance canoe race held at Keauhou Bay.
