Hobie Treasure Island Ocean Paddling Series Race 1 - Florida

With Tropical Storm Arlene making a track up past the Florida West Coast on Saturday providing some fantastic downwind runs reminiscent of Hawaii, all guessing was on for the what the weather gods would produce on Sunday 12th of June for the inaugural Hobie Treasure Island Ocean Paddling series..
Sunday morning dawned with Arlene well to the North, and an 8 mph Southerly
providing a small bump and some left over ground swell, there was no
knowing who and how many would show up, but by 9:30 it was evident that we
had a real race and series kicked off in Florida. Great representation from
Miami with Tim Streeter heading up the group of 3 x OC2's and 2 x OC1's.
There were skis and paddleboards from up and down Florida East and West
Coast. What was even more phenomenal was the varied age groups, from Joe
Pettigrew (ski) and Bob Terbush (OC1) both representing the Grand Veterans
(+70) down to a strong showing of Open division folks in the Paddleboards
and Skis.
At 10:15 the race was on its way with the top skis and OC1's charging away
for the first upwind leg to the turn mark. Reid Hyle soon took command of
the race in the Skis and John Edwards led the OC1's at the first mark.
Meanwhile in the paddleboard class JP Atherholt was showing his dominance.
In the Sea Kayak division Michael Maddux showed good form. Many different
tussles ensued ending with a very fast race for Reid and John, Reid
completing the 8 miles in 1 hour 4 mins (7.5 mph) on his ski and John
Edwards taking the OC1 class in 1 hour 9 mins (7 mph). The OC2 division saw
Jon Sinnreich and Miguel Flores pull away to a comfortable lead. Karl Vogel
and Ben Stillman won the OC1 Relay class.
The short course folks had really close tussles in all the divisions, Jim
Lewis and Mike Zajac-Batell fought it out all the way to the finish in the
OC1 class. Tom Prionville won the skis posting the fastest time for the
Short course. The Sea Kayaks had a really close race with Stephen Hanily
taking the class.
Great performances were shown by the ladies, Karen Mirlenbrink won the
Skis, with Rea Siebert and Tonya Streinz taking the ladies Relay class.
Very impressive was Annie Morris in the paddleboard class as was Tara
Miller on an OC1.
A special thank you to the sponsors Hobie Catamarans, Hobie Apparel, Hobie
Sunglasses, Hurricane Canoes, Kialoa Paddles, Epic Kayaks, Architectural
Windows and Entries, The Moorings, Grand Expeditions and Crazypaddlers.
Next race is July 4th at Treasure Island with the final race of the series
on August 21st.
Florida Paddling is alive and well !
