Dave Kalama on top in Maliko day after states race - Aug 7
Why did we run an OC-1? Maliko race the day after states? Easy, so that all our visiting friends who came to Maui for the States and whom may never make it over during the OC-1 season would get a chance to experience our downwind run. Was it worth it? You bet ya!
All our canoes were on the water and others on island loaned their canoes as well. We had 57 participants, some well hydrated and ready to roll and others just crawling in from the party the night before. I believe all would say it was worth it.
I hear there were some rides to catch, one right after the other. Randy Botti, of H.I.P.A. exclaimed it was almost un-fair. "You miss one wave, no worries; there is another one right behind it." Luke and Keizo from Kaua`i and ocpaddler.com also got out there and went home with hardware and the experience of one Maliko run under their belts. Our Nanakuli, Van Geison `ohana had a good time on the OC-2.
A big MAHALO to all the local paddlers for your support and participation. It was great to have our returning veterans and also the many 1st timers. Today was a perfect day for "Maliko novices" as it was a little mellow, not the big waves Maliko can often have and thus more relaxing and fun.
