Queen Liliuokalani Race Update

Aloha paddlers!
Here are some updates for the 2005 Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Races.

Log onto www.kaiopua.org for more info.

CANOES

As always, we are exited to have so many crews coming this year from the mainland and
other countries. So.....heads up clubs from Kauai, Oahu Molokai and Maui...as usual, we loan all the available canoes we can arrange for to crews coming from outside the Hawaiian Islands. Hopefully you’ve already got your bookings with Young Bros!

LOGO SHOP

Just off the pool area, open Wednesday through Monday. We’ve previewed this year’s merchandise...really great!

REGISTRATION

Go to the Kia Opua web site for online registration.
The registration room, just across for the LOGO SHOP and pool at the King Kam, will be open:
Wed 3:00 – 5:00
Thur 3:00 – 5:00
Fri 8:00 – 6:00 **don’t wait until the last minute gang!**
Sun 7:00 – 8:00 *reg. will close and then reopen on the pier at approx. 8:30 for later races*
Check the web site for all the details of what you will need to bring to register your crews.

PARKING

If you are planning to drive to the race site Saturday and Sunday mornings,
please allow extra time to find parking.

RACE DAY SHUTTLE

For shuttle service, King Kam to Honaunau, and/or, Honaunau to King Kam on Saturday, Sept. 3; please contact the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel directly at (808) 329-2911. The hotel is will have shuttle service for those who reserve seats. No driving/parking hassle...just enjoy the ride before or after your race. Available to your spectator friends and family too!

THE PIER

In port, Thursday AND Friday...cruise ships. So some
areas of the pier will have limited access (or no access) and tenders will
be going to and from the pier to the ship. If you are out on the water
practicing, it is important to keep your distance from the cruise ship and
its tenders. If you have any questions about this, please check with a race
official about the federal regulations (serious stuff!).

INTERNATIONAL PADDERS NIGHT

Thursday night, 7:00 to 9:00 pm, same location as last year. Wow, we really had fun last year and thoroughly enjoyed mixing it up with all the paddlers that were in Kona from the mainland and overseas! If
you are in Kona Thursday, Sept. 1 please come and sign in....door prizes will be
given away! HEAVY pupus and no-host bar. If you weren’t there last year, the party is at the King Kam in the room just on the lobby side of the swimming pool.

FRIDAY NIGHT COACHES MEETING

Information at this meeting needs to be heard by all participants, including
all escort and official boat captains. Make sure there is at least one
representative from each crew attending this meeting! The meeting is at 7:00
pm at the King Kamehameha luau grounds.

RACE START PENALTY

Any canoe past the official start boats in the wahine and kane races will be
given a 15 minute time penalty.

IRON RACES AWARDS

Don't forget...awards celebration for the iron divisions of Saturday's race
will begin approximately 3:30 pm at Kamakahonu Beach (race site in front of
the King Kamehameha Hotel). All other divisions will be awarded at the luau
on Sunday.

Don’t forget all the other fun stuff...Torchlight Parade! Saturday Night Party!
Sunday Luau and Awards!

Aloha, and see you next week!

***PS...Kai Opua is sending paddlers to the World Sprints qualifying on Monday, September 5. This is the day our club members come together to get all the canoes that have been shipped from outer islands back up to Kawaihae and tied down for the barge ride home. We average around 60 canoes to load, trailer for an hour, and unload and tied down again. All in about 8 hours. Now that some of our paddlers will be on Oahu for the day, we would welcome any help we can get for all, or part, of the process. In return, we would welcome our helpers to the Mahalo Lunch. Uncle Bo really does it right...a beautiful catered lunch at the King Kam and satisfaction for finishing off a terrific weekend. How to help? We start at 6:00 am. Show up on the pier when you can, preferably with sunscreen and comfy shoes on.
