Florida's Hobie Paddling Series kicks off

Hobie Treasure Isle Ocean Paddling Series 2 Race 1
October 29th started with the first feel of fall and provided us all with 15 knot North Easterly wind and lower temperatures than usual. The fleet got off to a great start at 10 am heading 1 mile upwind.
In the Long Course division Reid Hyle on his Fenn jumped out to an early lead in the Surfskis while Harry Mountain also showed us all what some practice does by getting a great lead by the first mark in the OC1 division. The following leg was 5 miles and then a 3 mile leg back to the finish. Reid continued to stretch his lead and completing the course in a very fast 1 hour 6 mins. The exact distance was 8 miles which had Reid averaging 7.25mph. Rob Mirlenbrink and Rob Poulton actually had a dead heat for second place in the skis. Harry Mountain on his Hurricane OC1 managed to hold off a hard charging John Edwards in the OC1 class. This is the first time that Harry has beaten John and for all of us that know John, this is not easy! Stan Holoquist headed up the SeaKayak division as well as the Veteran division. In all divisions we had 8 Veterans, they are our heroes, we all want to be like them ! Tonya Streinz won the Ladies Division on her first solo race on a Hurricane OC1. The normal father son tussle between Lex Raas and Jean Raas on their Hurricane OC1's had Lex winning out this time. In the last 4 races it is 2 wins each.
In the short course, Daryn Smith narrowly beat Joe Lipka both on Hurricane OC1's. Veteran Bob Terbush on his Hurricane OC1 had a very respectable finish of only 2 minutes behind Daryn, great job Bob ! Brenda Hood in her first ocean race on her Hurricane OC1 did splendidly.
This race was held in conjunction with the Treasure Island Classic organized by Rea Sieber and we all thank her for her organization, great prizes, lunch and camaraderie.
