OC1 purchase, looking for advice

was submitted as news, moved here to forum...

Hi folks, Paul from BC interior. Generally flat OC6 experience moving to OC1, planning to race off shore but most training to be flat water. Do I go cockpit or sit on top. Should I be really concerned about weight. Currently considering a 28 lb Stingray. Any thoughts would be great and thanks

I suggest a sit-top. If you tip/flip you do not want to be bailing a cockpit boat in rough stuff. Use a wet suit. You want to just get back on and let it self-bail(foot wells). The Stingray is a fine boat...fast and a little more tippy than the others. Look at Huki's and the Hurricane as well.

I'm not sure what you mean my cockpit but I would have to agree that the footwell drains are a must on all boats. I currently have a (Karel) Mantra and a (Martin) Hihimanu and the footwell drains are great. As for the weight of the boat I would be more concerned with what it is made of and who makes it. I prefer the Kevlar models on all Karel boats just because they are stronger than the carbons.

I just bought a sealion, which is a cockpit boat, and it's a really really nice canoe. I dont know what the canadian ocean is like, but for flat water this cockpit boat works really well, and i'm sure if there isn't much action out in the ocean that'd it'd be great out there also. The canoe comes with a spray cover which i haven't really used yet, but in the ocean it'd probably be pretty neccessary, but i think it's more for heat issues than actually keeping water out. You'll be warmer in in a cockpit canoe than anything else, I dont know how good a stingray would be for training on flat water all the time.
