huki boats

i recently ordered a huki V1-A. wondering if anyone has any experience with this boat. i plan to paddle it mostly in the gulf of mexico and the atlantic off of miami. don't plan to race too much, at least at first. is the boat seaworthy when compared to other makes, such as the hurricane or outrigger connection boats? i weigh about 175 and have a rough-water ama and surfing rudder. thanks.

The boat is well built and will do great in ocean conditions. I have raced on one a few times and have always come away with good results.

I have a V1-B and think Huki's are great. I recommend installing a 6" stow hatch (for those power bars, water, car keys, GPS, etc) if you didn't order one installed. Also, Yakima Mako saddles with Jude's foam adapters really do make a great fit.

I don't have any experience with V1-A, but I do have experience with Huki V2-A.
Just last Saturday my club (Fairport Aquatic Club, Frenchman's Bay, Ontario) raced it across Lake Ontario (32 miles), with steady 10-15mph headwind, gusting up to 25mph. First mile of the race was in 6-8 ft waves, and she had no problem with anything.
After actually going across the lake in those conditions I'd say that Huki boats are very seaworthy.
Oh, it was also the first ever crossing of Ontario Lake in an OC2.

congratulations. sounds like you guys had a big day. i've been out on the boat twice now. huli'd four times. it was a lot of fun though. i've been sailing, paddling kayaks and canoes now for about five years. this is the most challenging craft i've yet to helm.

Thanks, it was a big day for us as we are a brand new club in the area of the world where there are very few outriggers and even less outrigger racing. We'll change that though ;)
Anyways, I'm glad you are having fun with the boat. The first time you actually surf it is going to be awesome...
My club's OC1s are coming in this week, we got one V1-A and one V1-B coming.
Cannot wait to go for a swim, I mean paddle...
