What the hell is that clicking?

So I bought a Stingray. Great so far, but when I paddle on the right side, 30% of the time I hear a click. There are no cracks, no soft spots, boat is solid, but that clicking that is driving me crazy. Any thoughts? Mahalo!

Are you talking about a knocking noise? I've been on some boats that knock after you paddle a stroke. I think its the rudder shaft shifting in its bore because of excessive clearance. Nothing to be worried about.

Could be a loose steering cable knocking against the strongback, or possibly an unsecured section of the strongback. Load dispersment while paddling on that sidecould cause it........Tiger

I bet it's just the iakos creaking that used to happen to me on my Stingray. Eventually it goes away or you stop noticing it.

If your Stingray is from Canada, I might have the solution.

I love the Stingray, but don't like the connection between the Iako and hull. For those of you who don't know, the Canadian boats only come with aluminum Iakos. I really had to crank down on the front nut in order to keep it from moving or possibly clicking. If you are putting a lot of pressure on the right side, that might be the issue, since you would be moving the ama up and down slightly. I really had to tighten that front connector, otherwise it was feeling loose and jerky to me.

My stingray is from Canada and the front iako/ama interface is so tight I have to use vasoline to put it together. I doubt it is that. Thanks for the Ideas, keep 'em coming. Peace

Slow Down.

A fellow paddler asks for advice about a problem he or she is having with a canoe, and we end up blasting boat designs and each other. I think we can do a little better than that.

I am sure we could list each boat design and talk about the advantages and disadvantages until the sun has set.

Let's get back to trying to help this paddler with his problem.

Aloha

Let's get a little bit more of a description about this click. Where is the sound coming from? The front or rear. Does it occur when the rudder is turned? Do the iakos shake in their bore?

I only hear it when going full speed/racing. The iakos are so tight that I have to use vasoline to get them together. It sounds like it is under or near my legs. Only when I paddle on the right. I am racing on Saturday, so I will try to pay more attention. I have only paddled the boat 4 times. I will keep you posted. Peace

I took a friend's boat to Clay Carson at Sand Island for some repairs and asked him about the clicking noise. He said that it could be the cable(s) knocking against something in the hull of the canoe itself. Before the top and bottom portion of the hulls are epoxied together, the cables that run from the peddles to the rudder in the canoe are secured with a ziptie or something similar to keep them from swinging. Sometimes the manufacturer doesn't secure them well or forgets to secure them altogether. If its that, there is nothing to be concerned about.

Call Karel and ask what's that clicking sound. He should know, or maybe Jr. or Maui would know.

right you are... it's a loose pin in the rudder box.. my old ski used to do it.. shouldn;t happen on a new canoe
