Refinishing Paddles

Hey, Looking for opinions on refinishing paddles. Some use epoxy, some varnish, some resin?
So what do you all do? how much sanding? how many coats? what products? Thanks, 1968

I refurbished my paddle for the first time last year after two seasons of paddling with the same paddle. I also shortened it by two inches. I pulled handle off first, shortened the shaft, then epoxied the handle back on. I then broke of the splintering wood on the sides of the paddle and filled a crack in the blade that I created when I tried to use the blade for steering (bad move) with Elmer's wood glue. I then used 120 grit sandpaper to sandpaper the whole paddle and went up in increments until I hit 400 grit. I then applied several coats of marine varnish with a brush. The marine varnish can be purchased from any boating supply store. I bought mine from Kilgos. The paddle turned out really nice except for some little bumps in the varnish that can be felt when you run your hands over it. I think it was caused by dust or bubbles in the varnish. I used the paddle for one season and it still looks good.

Good luck.
