starting races

what's the proper technique at the starting line? i've got a race coming up in june in ft. lauderdale, fla. do you start from a total stop or are you allowed to paddle toward the line in a countdown fashion like in sailing? if you go from a complete stop, what do you do to try to sprint out to the front?

races are supposed to start from a stop... but they usually end up with people inching forward for like the minute before the race.. since you know that the line is going to be moving forward you should make sure that you are always at the front of that line and never fall behind and have the start catch you by surprise..
everyone tends to pretty much do a dead sprint for the first few minutes until things spread out a little... if your turning around a buoy at the start make sure you sprint ahead cause otherwise you'll get screwed on the turn, you want to be able to make the turn when there arent many canoes around. goodluck in your race

lukes right make sure you get ahead at the turn if there is one because in my race i had to turn on the buoy and the guy behind me his ama came up onto my back so i guess you could say he was flying his ama on my back haha.
