Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a
YMCA
March 23rd, 2003 Race
Sponsored by KAI KANE
Long Course: Kalihiwai Bay to Buoy to Hanalei Bay
Short Course: Kalihiwai Bay to Hanalei Bay
With the wind and sea conditions looking as they did, it looked to be like a
promising day as this same race last year was in a calm sea with high surf and
raining. This time around was definitely more fun! It couldn’t compare
to earlier in the week when the trades were really crankin, but at least we
got some action and sunny skies for race day. The short course was almost a
straight shot down to Hanalei while the long course paddlers had to work a bit
with about a mile or so of uphill paddling before the ride down.
Paki Vaughan was visiting from Oahu, and will soon be a resident of Kaua'i.
He led the fleet down the coast in the short course and we’re hoping this
means he will be a regular next year. Diane Daniells’ father is visiting
from the mainland, and entered with Diane and Mark in the short course. He is
seventy-seven years old and still going strong! All of our 60+ paddlers are
such an inspiration! For a few paddlers (some from last season, some new) this
was their first race of the season, and it was great to see them out there.
First in the Open Men’s division of the long course was David Beck flying
in a time of 1:14:33. In close pursuit was Steve Cole in 1:15:49, and Bret Deblin
in 1:16:35. In the Open Women’s it was Katy Curtis in 1:26:43 followed
by Robin Jumper in 1:29:23, and Margie Goodno in 1:30:12.
In the short course Paki Vaughan was first finisher with a sound lead coming
in at 54:50. Paul Frazier was second in 58:11, and Leggs Yokotake third in 59:25.
Erin Struxness was first woman finisher in 1:08:15 with Midge Horwood closing
in at 1:08:39. Frankie Hudson came in third in 1:10:48
The race was on in the OC-2 division in the long course between Sanoe Hookano/Justin
Tabalno and Mark Baird/Tom Perry. This time it was Mark and Tom arriving at
the finish line first in just under a minute before Sanoe and Justin. The short
course had three OC-2s with Herbert Kekuawela and his girlfriend, Sandy coming
in first. These two just keep getting faster each time they come out. The real
race was between the young (15-19) women’s team of Ashlee Fujimoto and
Donna Robles and the men’s (50-59) team of Bill Evslin and Steve Gates. The
ladies got em by two seconds, and a re-match is expected for the 30th!
It was an awesome day at Hanalei. What a beautiful setting to kick back and
relax after a good paddle with ono sandwiches, an ice cold Steinlager,
and some wonderful prizes provided by Kai Kane. A big mahalo
nui loa to Kai Kane and Steinlager
for making this race such a great experience - they really made this workout
worthwhile! Mahalos are also in order to Summer Dillberg for making sure everyone
was signed up and legal, and to her and Theresa for timing/finishing. Our escort
boat people did a fabulous job out on the course watching out for us, and what
a cheer leading squad they made! They were Don and June Jones/Selena and Lori
Cole in Paul Frazier’s boat, and Jimmy and Mary Ledward. Last, but not
least, to Ann Hermosura for allowing Steve to participate in the race by taking
over his photography duties.
The next race is sponsored again by Kai Kane and Steinlager
on Sunday, March 30th. The long course will be from Kalihiwai Bay to Makua Beach
(Haena beach park), the short course is from Hanalei Bay to Makua. Registration
for both courses will be at Kalihiwai Bay at 9 a.m. Call Tom at 826-5503 with
questions.
