Big turnout for Sarento's season opener race

Newlywed’s Kai & Lauren win their respective divisions in the MCKC Sarento’s Season opener. It was a classic South Maui, Kihei day, warm sunshine, calm waters, turtles and a lot of muscle (and a whole lot of strong will) to get through it all. The carrot at the end of the stick? That’s got to be Aaron’s spread of food, drinks and live music at Sarento’s Restaurant.
Maui Canoe & Kayak registered over 100 paddlers for today’s event. This must be close to an all time high for the first race of our Hurricane Series. It is good to have the West side well represented again and to have our Hana members continue to make the dedicated drive. We love having all of you guys.
Short course is starting out with a big “BANGâ€. You know these guys are going to step-up their training as they are all battling for that top finish. 1st year Novice B paddler Keith Keahi took the short course by 12 seconds. Let’s keep our eyes out for Keona Dang, Hiro Takahashi & Mike DeLima, the returning 2nd year paddlers and see what they can do about that in the next race.
The paddleboarders had a battle of their own. The top 4 finished within 31 seconds of each other. Our shoulders are burning just thinking of what they went through for over an hour. Stand-up and rudderless? I think we are bordering on being just as crazy as the paddle boarders. It sure makes for a good, long, hard work-out.
