It was such a beautiful morning until we started racing and began to be cooled by a bit of a head wind. Why did we not foresee this and reverse the course I thought as I plowed my way upwind? Why aren’t I on an OC-2? Why does everyone in front of me look so effortless? You know all those thoughts that start running through your mind. As we rounded the buoy at Haycraft we still had to keep the uphill charge until finally there was some relief past McGregor’s point when everything was calm and HOT. Gee if it’s not one thing it is another. I think only a true downwind run would make most of us happy.
We had several visiting and returning competitors from Oregon and California. The surfski division was the largest it has been all year. Barry Franks remained on top. The OC-1 men’s 60+ division had 8 entries, which is also the largest ever. Returning visitor Hank Johnson took this division and was followed by Carlo Zezza, and Gary Kunsman. It was the first race of the season for all three of them, they must have been doing some serious training to come in and win all the awards. Congratulations! Boy is it tough to get a medal in some of these divisions.
Congratulations to all our competitors. From our youngest, Noa Herrera 9 years old who races with his father on an OC-2 to our most senior member, part time Maui resident on her way to New Zealand for the IVF sprints, Florida Town who is in top shape in her 70’s. Also to our stand-up paddleboarders and paddleboarders who make it look so easy.
Tammy Williams was an awesome sponsor providing everything from Cajun mahimahi plate lunch to medals. Optic Nerve with their provision of sunglasses is always a hit and has paddlers running to receive them. Mahalo also to Hammer Gel – we are so spoiled here.
