Marko's Maliko draws 120 paddlers

Preparing for this race was everything as usual, canoe, iakos, ama, paddle, hammer gel. sun screen… until we thought about what this race is really about: Remembering and honoring those of our paddling buddies who are no longer here with us enjoying the ocean and beautiful day. This shifted our focus to flowers, leis, and thoughts of love and friendship and family. We truly have a close Maui Canoe & Kayak family here on Maui. It is common to hear paddlers expressing how much they enjoy the series and the friendships. We have our foundation of experienced paddlers who really do help and kokua the newer paddlers with training tips, Maliko runs, etc. It is always fun to hear the stories of the 1st Maliko run and how scary it can be just getting out of the mouth. Congratulations to all who raced and especially to those who did it for the first time.
WOW – even with the light winds and small bumps we had the largest turn-out ever for this race. Hawaii, Moloka`i, Kaua`i, and Oahu were all represented as well as Washington, California and Australia. It is great to have Mark Sanvold leading the pack; it makes the adrenalin run a bit more for Barry, Geoff and Eric. Also to have Manny, Theibert, Ikaika and Kafoa here gives all our guys a bit of excitement to see how they all stack-up. Lauren returned from her training in CA to dominate the women’s run while in the first match-up of OC-2 men team’s Kalama/McGurn vs. Shimer/Mihlbauer saw the cousins Dave & Junya up front. Perhaps setting the stage for next weeks relay competition?
Being that this was a Maliko run and in memory of Marko, several returning paddlers made their season debut: JB, Rory, & George. How did these guys stack-up? Well they were all in the top 25. Kai rounded up a number of 19 and under paddlers who joined us for the first time. Special congratulations to all of them.
Roger Crouse of Maui Rents provided a lovely setting and ono lunch while Kai Bartlett provided the awards, door prizes and Steinlagers. Mahalo to both of you for your continued kokua and aloha.
Thoughts of Marko raced in and out of our minds during the race, thanking him for the wind and waves that we did have, drawing on his strength when I was tired, and remembering what a kind and gentle spirit he was. We are grateful for the times we were able to share and we do miss him. It was a blessing to have his daughter Kamalei riding on an official boat and to have Margie racing. One day soon it will be Margie and Kamalei racing as our next generation of paddlers are growing-up.
