As we were making our way up against that little stretch of head winds I had to remind myself that it could be a lot worse with thunder, lightning and heavy showers and all of us in our homes sheltered from the conditions. It turned out to be a beautiful afternoon, actually a bit hot, a welcomed change from all the rain. The first 3 miles we even managed to have some small bumps for the riding. Don’t get me wrong, I was worked by the end of the race as were other paddlers who stopped along the way for a breather, to re-group and work thorough the cramping and fatigue. Of course if you are super hero Kai Bartlett it is no problem to jump off a 8 _ hour flight home from Aotearoa, transfer to an inter-island flight, land at the Kahului airport, drive straight to the race, rig and still dominate the long course finishing 3rd overall to surfski competitors. CONGRATULATIONS to Kai!
To quote Ricky’s remarks at our awards ceremony, our “brave soul†on the paddleboard is Dave Mello. What an inspiration he is.
Making his debut for the 2006 Hurricane Ocean Series was Jacob Abeytia, and yes he finished 2nd only to Kai. Jacob is such the natural gifted paddler, and person. FYI: he does practice and put in his time on the water.
On the short course in the Novice B, 1st year competitor divisions: Kalai Ancog won his first race of the year, what a way to top off the season. Jason Gomes and Spud Lenhardt were 2nd and 3rd With Keith Keahi out the last 2 races due to injuries sustained from snowboarding; the Nov. B field may be wide open. We’ll tally the points and let you know our season winners at our next race. Megan Quale is a force to be reckoned with. As a first year novice she finished this race in 7th position overall and met one of her goals of being first wahine to the beach.
Fish or chicken tacos with Heineken light beers under the warm Maui sun capped off our day. The hum of conversations centered on the race, New Zealand, the hospitality of our Sponsor, Aaron Placourakis and all the good energy was a nice welcome home for us. We truly appreciate the kokua provide in our absence. Mahalo to Don & Keri Mehling, to Rob and Patty Phillips and to our dear friend and supporter Gail Murakami. Also thanks to Val who has just started volunteering this year, hopefully we’ve got her hooked.
Finally, I know I probably spent a little extra on the medals but I just couldn’t resist the little bling-bling – it was so cool. I hope your flashing disco medals made for a few laughs and fun last night.
