Kai Bartlett wins Starbucks Maui Challenge
Mahalo to all the paddlers from near and far who made this race such a large and competitive field. We realize the time and energy, not to mention the funding, it takes to attend a race on another island and so Maui Canoe & Kayak Clubs thanks all of you for making the trek to Maui. A special MAHALO to Randy Botti and Ronona Della Cioppa for organizing the Big Island gang 40+. To Manny Kulukulualani for taking on the organization of the Oahu trailer and also to Jerome & Choppie Kalama and Ron and Camie Kimball for taking care of the transportation of all our canoes to Kalua Koi for the upcoming race. You folks are awesome. Speaking of awesome, that would be the sponsorship and support from STARBUCKS. Mahalo.
We were hoping for a bit more wind and waves but it was pretty fun as it was. We heard it was just right for many paddlers who are not as accustomed to big surf. It was all about holding a line and being disciplined. It was so much fun to ride the waves south, people were catching huge, long rides towards Lana`i but then had to suffer through paddling back up to Molokai at the end of the course. Those who stayed closer to Molokai and rode the waves towards Molokai ended up at the front of the pack. This was unlike other years where the Kalohi channel between Lanai and Molokai was an expressway to loop you right back up to Kaunakakai. So how do you know which way to go? It is such a big ocean.
We all caught and enjoyed the rides from start till about 4 miles out of Kaunakakai. That was so much fun. Then it was time to go to work, you know when you are feeling tired and your muscles are grumbling and starting to punish you by cramping and you dream of drinking an ice cold coke. I think the Kona paddlers didn’t give the finish a second thought as they are accustomed to that malie water and warm sun. The rest of us broke through “the walls†and found relief in the cool clean ocean once we crossed the finish line.
So many races within this race. Of course there are the top dogs. They are amazing. Kai, Manny, Jr., Judd… they and the others up front seem to effortlessly connect the rides. Just need to add here that we are mighty proud of Tyson Kubo and his great finish. Dane, Margie, Andrea and Alana did this on the women’s side of racing. Dane was amazing as she was the first finisher from the first start which consisted of OC-1 solo women and OC-1 female and co-ed relay teams.
The top 3 finishers in the women’s relay were all from throughout the state of Hawaii. Last minute relay entry of Jane and Katy were the first wahine team to cross the line. As we messed-up at the awards ceremony we’d like to make a special mention of Jamie Kinard and Jen Asano who were 3rd to finish. Congratulations to all!
Highlights from this year’s race include 1) the record number of entries: 92 solo and 29 teams for over 160 paddlers. For us that is a lot of people. 2) Seeing and spending time with each other, seeing all the friends renew their relationships. 3) Of course the rides in the Pailolo channel and traveling from one island to another. 4) Learning that the design on the Starbucks tee shirt and coffee mugs was created by Hawaii paddler Beth Cooper. 5) Hearing all the stories from the days’ race.
We will add more divisions for the men’s solo division for next year. We will most likely increase the entry fee for solo paddlers by perhaps $10 so as to help pay for the water patrol. We are committed to keeping this a paddler friendly race (affordable, helpful with transportation, escort boats…FUN)
Mahalo to Gail, Patty, Velma, Jenn, Barb, Keri, Robb, and Walter for taking the time to volunteer at this race. Your kokua makes our race possible. Ricky & Sharon

I'm not sure what ****Paddlers listed by time not order of finish (2 starts meshed together) means. I guess look at the times, not finish order? Also, if you can't see the times you may need to scroll over since it doesn't fit on the page very well -- at least on my screen.

"Paddlers listed by time as opposed to order of finish means that:
We had 2 starts; OC-1 Women and OC-1 co-ed at 9:30 and all others at about 10 a.m.
So for example:
In order of crossing the finish line: # 31 Chris Smith (OC-1 male); # 32 Dane Ward (female OC-1): & # 33 Eric Barto (OC-1 men). However since Dane started with the 1st start and the men with the 2nd start; when you assign the times it moves Dane from # 32 across the line to # 74 in order of time. (She was and remains the first finisher from the first start).
Another way to understand it is:
You may have raced someone across the finish line but if they were from the other start then you, then you will not be listed by them in the final results. So if you started with the 1st start and raced someone from the 2nd start across the line it means that the person from the 2nd start made up the ½ hour lead that the 1st start person had and thus they will have a faster time then you.
Understand or more confused?
Sharon"
